    Is it an interview faux pas to ask what the pay is like? I asked in one and they happily told me, and in my next one they made a face....?

    In all the interviews ive had (3) lol ive never asked only one have told me which is aol!

    I wouldn't ask normally though!

    Its a natural enough a question to ask, the interviewer should expect it. You need to know the facts about the job before you think about taking it. If the money is not clear in the advertisement for the role, ask away.

    Most ask you what your salary expection is, and if they dont, you go ahead and ask what the pay is, after all its why we work

    I have never, ever finished an interview without asking that question.
    I see no reason to waste either of our times by going through the whole process of a second interview without knowing whither I'd take it or not based on salary.
    I recall cutting one particular interview short once they told me. The pay was crap and I told them so.

    If its the money you want the Job for then ask , if you see it as a stepping stone into an industry then dont.

    If the money is crap get the experience then look at moving on.

    i always ask the question. kenny 5 is dead right the face puller was a knob.

    I work for money - end of. job satisfaction / working in a great team (all the other bull)etc...is secondary.

    Well, they care about what you have to offer and ask you questions. If you care about what they have to offer then go ahead and ask.

    I don't see what's the problem with that? It is a 2 way thing. They have to decide about you while you have to decide about them. Get the best out of them at the interview... what your salary will be like, if/when do usually reviews take place, do they ask you to work extra, do they pay you if you work extra etc.

    That's how I would do it anyway ;)

    I dont ask but i usually add a little bit on to my salary when asked about expectations or current salary.


    Does make it hard after three interviews and someone offers you a job with bugger all money attached and expects you to be happy about it after they have wasted your time.

    In future i think ill ask at interview number two.

    Personally as a contractor I do loads of Interviews. It's not a question I've ever asked in an Interview. I usually know this before I get offered an interview or if I don't I find out soon enough.

    However a common mistake people do make is to think that the offer is the only one; People should not be afraid to ask for a better salary. A company is always gonna offer you the lowest they can first off. They won't withdraw their offer jus because you ask for more.

    However these negotiations are something that can be done after the interview.

    I remember one place where the two interviewers actually looked at each other as if to say "Did he ask what I think he asked?":)

    Needless to say, I didn't get the job. But really, what else would I be working for other than to put a crust on the table?

    You are well within your rights to ask.

    If you don't know and they don't advertise then it's a fair question. I'd like to hear from people holding the interviews as to what they think of the question. If they advertise and you ask then you make yourself look like a dummy tbh.

    As KoK said, job satisfaction is a plus but money is the reason we all work (or 99% of us anyway).

    Thanks everyone for your advice, I know I'm within my rights to ask, but I don't want to come across as arrogant and money hungry in the interview (I'm not applying to be a stockbroker) on the other hand, I am not volunteering when I need to be earning.
    Turns out I got the first interview and not the second, the second job is harder work for only 25c extra an hour! No wonder they weren't pleased when I asked :)

    I would also like to hear from an interviewers perspective, maybe I should move this to a jobs forum?

    I don't think it would be a bad thing to be asked that as an interviewer. At least you'd know the candidate wasn't afraid of addressing important/delicate issues, was upfront and didn't waste time!

    I have been on interview boards and never had that question asked but then again the pay is well known where I work.
