Thailand September 2007.. beaches in rainy season?

Hey, there's about 4 of us planning on going to Thailand in September (student graduates... going to spend a month there before getting real jobs at home). I just have a few questions I'd be really grateful if anyone could answer. Thank you in advance.

    1. What are the beaches/ islands like at this time of year (rainy season), such as ko phi phi?... are they still stunning+ nice to travel to?

    2. Would it be ok just to arrive in Bangkok+ find accommodation (cheap), as we go and jump on random buses/ trains etc... not really plan much

    3. I've seen the other SEA thread... but what do people think are rare unmissable sights we should not miss?

    4. Has anyone tried surfing there (with not much experience) in september?

    5. Any recommendations of really great hostels/ cheap hotels to stay in would be great also

    Thank you

From what I remember the rainy season is different depending on where you are in Thailand. So you might be better off going to the islands on the other side, eg, Koh Samui, Koh Phan Ngan, etc.. Check it out before hand. The thorn tree is a good place for getting advice, have a look there.

Not sure how easy it is, I'd imagine it shouldn't be difficult but I had this pre-booked as it's a pretty long flight and I can't imagine you'd be in the humour for trekking around looking for a place after it. I wasn't and was glad to get straight to bed. Watch out for the taxi drivers, they'll rip you off and only be too happy to take you on a needless detour. Know what the rough price should be and be prepared to haggle.

Not sure where you are planning on going. Aside from the usual, there's the famous thai-boxing arena in Bangkok (can't remember the name). The river markets are purely for tourists, try going to a genuine Thai market, I enjoyed this and it's very interesting.

Not sure about surfing, the water was practically still where I was.

Don't know about this, I stayed in the Shangri-La, wouldn't exactly be cheap but a beautiful hotel that I'd recommend. It's very easy get accomodation on the islands so pre-booking is not needed. The huts are cheap, the ones on the beach cost a little more.
