GPS Vehicle Tracking Market (student query)

I am currently working on market research and business plan project (for one of the research groups in DCU), which aims to explore the current trends in GPS vehicle tracking market in Ireland and to identify potential future trends in this emerging industry.

A basic principle is that you have a small gps module (with SIM card) hidden in your car (this is not a GPS navigation device with large screen showing real-time location). This module receives a signal from satellite and sends GPRS packets (via mobile phone provider) to a server that processes the information of the moving vehicles (time, distance, location and speed). This inforamtion can be accessed by the user or (group of users) via Internet or mobile phone/pda.

    This technology is already used:
-In the event of stolen vehicles (insurance companies also becoming involved) either by car manufacturers: BMW, Porsche or independent firms
-Improving traffic flow (real time monitoring and predicting traffic)
-Public transport companies (Dublin Bus, AirCoach) to improve management of their fleet; provide real-time information to commuters (via mobile phones)
-I am also aware that some countries (not Ireland) exercise congestion charging in highly densed cities and pay-as-you-go road tax at national scale through this GPS.
-This GPS vehicle tracking technology may provide solutions to other industries such as national emergency, taxi and car rental companies and may be utilised in city traffic management system (incl. Port Tunnel). Any others that you would know off?

The objective of my project is to:
-qualify/quantify GPS vehicle market within Ireland (+identify current trends)
-identify and explore future market opportunities and potential solutions (needs to be relevant to Irish market - this will be quite challenging as I am international postgrad student not familiar with Irish market and its specific issues that GPS vehicle tracking technology can address)
-develop a commercialisation strategy plan + business plan.

I would appreciate if you could share your ideas with me on the above. This is a very interesting project and I though this would be a great place to exchange the information on this GPS vehicle tracking topic. Thank you!

    Rado
