G4 iBook Information

I was wondering if anyone had any experiences with this particular mac?

Yesterday one of my friends offered to sell me his mum's late 2005 iBook. She bought it through Galmac apparently, when she was working in NUI Galway. It's the 40GB Hard Drive model, 1.33GHz and the 12" display. It runs OSX Tiger but I don't know what version as of yet.

He went home yesterday to ask her about price etc etc. It was very lightly used apparently, as no one in the household took any liking to the OS, and has practically no cosmetic defects or otherwise. I've wiki'd the model so I've read most of the quality issues etc.

What would you feel is a fair price for this particular mac?

    TIA

I'd say about 700-750 euros, max. A refurbished MacBook can be had for about 950 euros.

Yep, I have a Core Duo 2 Macbook and a mac mini. I need a 2nd laptop and would prefer to stick to mac. He was saying "about €600" but apparently she was willing to sell it before Christmas for €500 so I'll have to wait to see what he says. Thanks!

The're a sweet little laptop, small and portable. For the 40BG model, I don't think I would go much more than E400 to be honest. If it on OS X v10.3 Panther (a 2005 iBook probably is) then maybe consider that you'll be better off allowing the extra euro required to update to Tiger which seems more stable.

It could sell for up to E500 to someone looking for a 'cheap' laptop but if you look around you can find them less. eBay is a good guide to the market, obviously you save on postage buying from a friend. Wouldn't go to E600 though, thats heading for macBook prices and a whole different type of laptop.

Hah -- exact same spec as my trusty little machine (that I'm typing on *right now*) :D
Well, I say trusty... tbh, the HDD could use a swap to a 5400rpm model (4200rpm SO SLOW!), and 512mb RAM is a nuisance sometimes -- upgrade if you can.

I'd still buy it for around €500 though.

Err... that means it runs 10.4, which you can upgrade to 10.4.8 by yourself ;)

    Thanks for the replies:)

Well unfortunately his mum is looking for "at least €650 because it is pristine". For that much money I'd rather sell the mini and use the proceeds and the €650 to buy an iMac.

I'm going to keep an eye on eBay though.

Id say hold out for 600e.

Ive have one. Using it right now.
It was my brothers, but i was using it more that he was, so i bought it from him :)

It really depends on what you want to use it for.

Basically I "need" a second laptop for typing on the go. I do a lot of work for my college newspaper and my own local newspaper and often I bring my laptop with me to events/conferences etc etc to type raw notes on. I find it easier than writing it out.

The size of the iBook appeals to me for this and I won't mind it taking knocks and bumps instead of my expensive (for me) macbook. I use the macbook for editing and music, while I leave most of my documents and misc files on the mini.
