Commute to dublin and general quality of life?

    Hi there,
I have been thinking about renting a room somewhere outside of dublin for alot of reasons- want to live in nice clean modern house/apt for reasonable rent and be able to park my car etc. On the Daft website, one of the places that looks interesting is charlesland....So, residents of charlesland...would you recommend it? obviously you have invested your hard earned cash there but if you were single, 30 and not much of a city slicker, would you be hopping on the first dart to rent in charlesland?
thats another thing...the commute? i know theres a shuttle bus to and from the dart at peak times but in reality are you left waiting for ages? and what happens if you are late coming home from work and miss the shuttlebus....are there taxis around or is the walk do-able...
i'm not from dublin and don't know alot of people here so the book club/walking activities that i've been reading about on this forum sound like a nice way to meet people too...Have any of you guys made friends that way?
thats alot of questions but i'd love to hear from anyone about the day to day living in a commuter town !

    Hi Delly

I'm not in Charlesland so I can't answer your questions on that but there are also places to rent in some of the older estates like Hillside and Heathervue and they are within walking distance of the Dart.

I commute to Lansdowne. In the morning there's no problem. Coming back in the evening, if you work late, the choice of trains is limited and it can be a bit of a drag. You do need to time it as there can be long gaps between trains.

That said, Greystones is a fab place to live imho. I've been down here since '93 and I absolutely love it. There are things I miss about town, but for quality of life, it is great down here. You need to try to have a social life locally tho' - it's not that easy to go out in town at night - and friends who live in town seem to think that they have to stay over for the weekend if they come all the way down here!!

You do need a car - but with one, there's loads of places to go ... Powerscourt, Avoca Handweavers, etc etc ... all good for meeting up with friends at the weekend. We have a lot of good restaurants, Dundrum is just up the road for shopping at the weekend, and cinema in dun laoghaire and dundrum are fairly close by.

You're welcome to the bookclub by the way. First meeting Monday 12th March at 8.00 pm in Script.

Good luck with the flat hunting whatever you decide!

I would highly recommend it. We moved in here in November and have been very, very pleased with the general area and the situation. Both my husband and myself commute to Dublin daily, taking the shuttle to the DART - it's timed absolutely perfectly, I have not yet had to have a wait for it. I know it can get crowded, and that peak times are pretty busy - my husband has had to wait for the next one on occasion. However, it's not usually a problem.

Being as we're commuters there hasn't been a great deal of time for socialising, though.

I don't think you'd want to live in Greystones without a car. You're at the outskirts of civilization and anything will be a car ride away.

I lived in Dublin for too long...Greystones is where civilization begins if you ask me!! :D

    Hi,

I really enjoy living in Greystones but I would like to point out that it is quite coupley! I'm single myself, but I enjoy my own company and my family moved out at the same time so they are close by. Having said that I do miss the sporadic trips to dublin pubs with single mates. I used to live in Ranelagh which was very convenient and can no longer decide on the spur of the moment to head to the pub, taxis are few and far between and I wouldn't recommend the 20 minute walk from the village at night if you're a single gal!

There were alot of nights out etc. talked about on this forum before but it was all "count partner and me in" etc. and I was afraid of feeling like a spare part.

Having said all of this I don't regret the move, I do feel much more relaxed here, I just wish 1 or 2 mates moved too!

I have to agree with Wingding, maybe we should start organising nights out for all the singletons who moved to greystones from here there and everywhere..........but yes it is a great place to live!

Speaking as a singleton, maybe they could set up a little cattle pen in the corner for us, where we can all hold hands for comfort and safety ?!!! lol

I was convinced if I did go I would be the only single person there - the stuff of nightmares, viz a viz that scene in Bridget Jones Diary where she walks into the Dinner Party from Hell, all couples ..... not, I hasten to add, that any couple here would be on a par with them !! My lovely x 2 neighbours on either side are proof to the contrary !!

Maybe loins will be girded, bullets bitten, .... ooooooer Missus !!

Now dont take this up wrong!

The sailing club is suffering from an overdose of sensible married people (like me.. well ok only the latter ) We badly need to get young single people into the club . (Well ok they could be married too) If anyone would like to try sailing we run a very casual weekend for beginners in May. Its relaxed and involves lots of beer and fun.(I run it!)

If anyone is interested let me know.

Sounds good. I presume since it's beginners you don't need to know anything. I actually did a course in dun laoghaire during my school days. It was over 10 years ago though and I wouldn't remember any of it.

So where do I sign up?

I am going away for a week and will PM you when I get back. Meanwhile you can try and encourage some of the others who correspond here!

They all went very quiet when I suggested sailing?!
