Ethernet controller driver

I've been using an old desktop for the last few weeks while I'm getting my laptop repaired. The computer was a bit sluggish to begin with so I formatted the HDDs and installed windows 2K (the machine originally came with XP but the guy who I got it off didn't have the CD for it).

After I installed window some of the hardware wasn't being recognised (video, sound & ethernet controller). I got the video & sound drivers off the manufacturers website and they're working fine now but I don't seem to be able to do anything about the ethernet controller (still shows up in the device manager with one of those yellow explanation makrs).

I use irish Broadband for my internet connection but the router isn't being recognised. Forgive my blinding ignorance but is the network port the same as the ethernet controller or are they linked in any way??(Router is connected through network port) I couldn't find any drivers on the manufacturers website so are there any kind of generic drivers I can use?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

First off who makes the PC whats the PC model?

If its a Dell is it an Optiplex, Dimension 260, 280, 520 etc?

Also how old is the PC

Failing all that try I would download the following drivers and try them.

    Broadcom 10/100
    Intel Pro 1000

PM your email address and I can try and email them to you if you like. Ill check back here after lunch

Yes, the "ethernet controller" is what your network port is on. If you look at the back of your PC, is it located in one of the slots, or is it on the same big panel as a lot of other things (keyboard, mouse, serial, USB ports, etc.)? If it is in a separate slot, you can just open the PC and look at the network card - it may say the model number on it. If it is not separate, it is integrated on the motherboard - if it is a branded PC (Compaq, Dell, whatever) you will need to find out what model PC it is (they may have something for looking up the serial number or something else on their website if you don't know the model), and if it is a generic PC you'll need to find out what motherboard it is (again you'll have to look inside).

The network port seems to be integrated allright. I have already tried checking out the manufacturer's website (Compaq/HP) but no joy there.

What would happen if I tried to install the Broadcom 10/100 or Intel Pro 1000 drivers and they were the incorrect ones??
