i have a friend who wants to study photography in Ireland, preferably to attain a BA.
does anyone have any info on photography courses here? mostly to do with prices (non-EU resident), which colleges/courses you'd recommend and which you wouldnt (and why), etc etc, but any info at all is good.
i'm not solely relying on this thread for info, but i just want to gather as much information as possible, so anything you have to share is helpful.

    thanks in advance!

Here's three colleges I know of offhand that have a photography BA course. Please not that I don't have any personal experience with these courses, I'm just listing them for you... However, I am applying to IADT for the photography course at the mo. You will most likely need a portfolio for photography as it is a restricted course like most other "artistic" courses... :)

    IADT

    DIT

    GRIFFITH COLLEGE

Also, QUALIFAX is very handy to search for courses if you wanna give it a go. Apparently it lists all the courses available...

Hey, application dates for those colleges have come and gone, if your friend wants to apply, it's going to have to be next year!

You need a portfolio for both IADT and DIT, but not for Griffith College (afaik).

I've just applied to the first two myself- bricking it now lol...

I'll be doing a PLC this year, then go for direct entry in DIT or IADT, although ive been thinkin of doin the actual degree in Dubai

Well tbh, I wouldn't even count Griffith College, you're not accepted based on a portfolio or anything- in fact you dont even need one! You get in if you have enough money oh and if you 'pass' the LC/interview (mature student).

The head of photography in Griffith is also considered by many as Irelands top studio, model, glamour and fetish photographer...

    by many what exactly?
some of the images are strong but he's hardly the next bob carlos clarke (r.i.p.)

In a private college the lecturers wages come from your fees, have to wonder if they will be as honest in critiquing your work, as the lecturers in dliadt or dit certainly are.

Count me wrong about Hector if you want...but then, he does get quite a few jobs.

But then, how many colleges are going to have the next Bob Carlos Clarke?

    Possibly moreso.

If a course isn't good, people won't go, and the tutor won't get paid. No students=no fee's=no job.

Not saying that the tutors are fantastic, not having any personal experience, but I have heard good things.

Oh, I get you now... Irelands top studio, model, glamour and fetish photographer who works as a college lecturer :)

Spent years in dlcad / dliadt... the critiques are completely objective as they are in dit... they're not worried about producing good students... because they consistently do. People want to go to these colleges. Not to say there's anything wrong with gcd, just that people don't tend to bite the hand that feeds them.

Lol, yep. Because lecturing is a terrible terrible job.

    :)

Look, at the end of the day, I just defended Griffith. I've seen some quite good work coming out of there, just like any other college. I like a lot of Hectors work, (And if you look at websites like Imapp for comparison...you'll see why people think he's good.) and I know quite a few people that would agree, and models that use Hector.

Griffith gets students, and not just students who don't meet the requirments for DIT/IADT/NCAD etc.

thats for EU residents only as far as i know

and thanks to everyone who replied. as for Griffith being expensive, it really doesnt compare to $46000 for a year in Yale!!
