Replacing Laptop Optical Drive

    Hey,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, and am looking at upgrading the optical drive on it. I'm looking at picking up one of the slimline drives off komplett.ie, like this NEC one.

My question is whether I can fit this drive into the lappy. The only problem that I can forsee is that the bezel may differ, and I was wondering whether it would be possible to "transplant" the one off the current drive I have installed.

Alternatively, if anyone here has experience of this kind of thing, and would like to recommend another option, I'd love to hear it!

    Thanks in advance

    hi cynton,
can't access the komplett site at the mo but i bought a NEC DVD slimline writer off them last year. it was to replace a broken CD writer/DVD reader in an Iqon laptop. the drive was an exact replacement but i found that the button and light were in different places on the new bezel so i didn't change it. mine sits flush with the laptop but i do see some dell laptops with fancy moulding so then it would look out of place!

one other issue i had was that the drive was defaulted to MASTER mode. my harddisk is MASTER so i had to change the internal firmware of the drive to SLAVE. that was an annoying part of it which took about a week after i found out how to do. had to buy a slimline cd to ide adapter to hook it up to a normal PC and then flash it!
    reported the problem here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=173074

    got the solution here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=174210

so be warned that its more work than you might think!

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I think I might be able to change my HDD to SLAVE if necessary if I encountered that problem.

Besides, I'm also looking at replacing the HDD too, cos it's a 3 and a half year old 4200rpm disk that's probably getting a bit old too!

Anyone else have any experience of this type?
