pet in rented apartment

i've been living in a rented apartment for three years. I had a cat for a year which was no problem. the cat died and last november i got a dog. he's a puppy of 5 months. today i got a letter from the property management company saying:
we have been advised that you are the owners of a dog who has been fouling the common areas on a regular basis. obviously this is causing great distress to your neighbours and is especially inconsiderate towards our caretaker, who has to clean up the mess left behind by your dog. we wish to advise that if the fouling of common areas continues, we will be requesting that the dog be removed from the development.

when we moved in and signed the contract with the landlord there was no mention of pets not being allowed or any rules from the management company. there is another dog in an apartment beside us and there are plenty of dogs stray or loose in the area. while i understand my dog does do his 'business' outside the apartments i feel it is unfair that we are blamed for the lot. since there was no mention of any of this before we moved in and nobody has said anything in the three years, are the legally allowed remove our dog? if we had known i would not have got a dog. now we have him 4 months and may have to give him up which is extremely unfair on us and the dog. what would my rights be here?
    apologies for the long post.
    thanks
