Dan Grades

Hello all,
Question for the Bjj guys again. Are there Dan grades in Bjj? I seem to remember Rorium (sp?) Gracie having them on his belt in an instructional video but don't really hear people going on about them. Whats the story?

No dan grades in BJJ. Just blue,purple,brown and black belts or tshirts in our case. Rorian (pronounce it right and you get an idea of what kind of guy he is) might well have introduced dan grades if it makes money, there were accusations of him selling belts in the past and many of the gracies have nothing to do with him.

i was under the impression that rickson and someone else where 8th dans, helio was 10th and there people in between.

There are different degrees in black belts. From my understanding, you must spend 3 years under tutelage from a higher degree before you are awarded your next degree. I found the official ruleset on the IBJJF website, they may have changed.

yes there's dan grades but just like judo after BB its just 'time in'. i wouldn't pay any attention to them. dan grades excite beginners 'oh look he's a 5th dan' but no one any good cares about them - just preformance

Thats kind of what I was hinting at, Been to the states 5 times training for 3 months at a time and never rolled with any "Dan" black belts and that includes 3 of the Machados, Royler, Chris Brennan, Javier Vazquez and Karo Parysian (althought strictly he is Judo BB.) Not a dan grade in sight. Personally not into belts but 4 of them enough particularly as a lot of people never leave the first one. If you need to add more it starts to become like scout badges which past making fire and knots cease to have any meaning.

Excuse me for my ignorance when it comes to BJJ, but isn't there some sort of red belt or black/red belt after black?? Or I'm I thinking of something different entirely?

1. i'm amazed by the amount of people who type 'BBJ' instead of 'BJJ' - its brasilian jiu jitsu not brasilian bu jitsu

what was it like to roll with karo dave ?

Karo is super nice guy, very funny and a good mate of Chris and rolling with him is an experience. Very tight control as you would expect from a Judo BB and with sambo experience can pull a kneebar or heel hook out of the most unlikely positions. Good Kimuras too and you do not want to stand up with him. He has adapted many of the Judo throws to no gi / mma and will quite happily throw you on your head! I have some more footage from the seminar he did and will throw it up on youtube when i get a chance.
