this stupid thing I got from ALDI over christmas: it needs its own power cable (as long as its hooked through USB afaik) so Im wondering if I thread it through an eSATA connection (which its fitted out for) will it still need the power cable?

I absolutely hate the thing because I end up unplugging it whenever Im not using it or when I shut down. Then that makes the USB controller a real fusspot.

Im hoping to be able to do it though an eSATA connect, but all I really, really wanna do is make so the Hard Drive is powered through my machine; so it starts and stops when the PC does.

I have an ample power supply for the Job (I think...450 watts..I do run a lot through the beast though)..maybe theres a *safe* way of modding its AC supply to come directly from the PC unit??

Unfortunately even eSATA drives need a seperate power cable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

What you need is a slimline 2.5" external drive that can be powered from the usb. Much handier. Something like this http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=324975

Well considering I already purchased this 320gb monster, I'd prefer to do something crazy...

...how advisable would it be to splice one of the power-wires inside my computer with the power plug for the eSATA drive?? (assuming I can get the same voltage?)
