Can VISTA play video MP4 video files?

I seem to have run into a small issue. have some MP4 files which i'd love to play within the MCE but they aren't "seen" .

So i thought i'd try my old reliable VLC player but I can only hear the sound when i try to play them in VLC...

At a bit of a loss as they work fine in XP on my other machine and i thought i'd got all the right codecs

Besides the reg hack there is also a easy way for them to be seen if you place a recognised file in the folder such as wmv or avi the MP4 files will then show under media centre.

Worked for me on MP4 & MKV files.

As for decoding try the CCCP codec pack it is a bloat free pack that contains the stuff you need like ffdshow/Haali to get playing videos reliably under directshow at least.

If your wondering about thumbnails in MP4/MKV that is another matter entirely sometimes works and sometimes doesn't seems to work for MP4 files more so than MKV from what I've observed (thumbs must be enabled through Haali Media Splitter properties page).
