I bought a cable in Maplin which allows you to connect a laptop to a tv from an s-video socket to a scart tv input.

I can get it connected up but when i activate it from my laptop, the tv screen displays what i'm seeing but everything is tiny and in greyscale. Am i doing anything wrong?

you need a composite adaptor for the greyscale.
On the size side check the screen resolution. Ideally you should use the secondary monitor output at 800 x 600 as TV is useless for resolution unless of course you are connecting to a HD lcd tv.
