Has anybody here got themselves setup with Apple TV?
I always wanted to be able to sync my computer to my tv since i have most of my media on computer format and also since it will work out cheaper than having to get a DVD Player and a Hi-Fi.

A few questions for those who might be using this..
Does it only play movies you have bought thru iTunes and is there any DRM applied to the unit?
What are the alternativies for sync'in between MAC & TV?

Apple TV has been delayed till sometime next month, so highly unlikely anyone has used it ;), info here.

On the DRM issue I'm not sure, but I guess it should play anything bought in iTunes.

it will play anything in itunes yes. then it will also play anything in your movies folder. i.e. what i plan to do is; create an alias for my 400gb external hdd and place it in the movies folder. then when the apple tv syncs to my macbook it can also read all the stuff from external hdd.

    cant wait to get it!

and yes apples drm, called "fair play", is on anything you buy from the itunes store..

theres not really any other great altrnatives out there for it... a wireless video sender maybe.. btu the quality from them is poxy

I think apple made mistakes announcing the iPhone and Apple TV so soon, gives competitors a great chance to finish there products and possibly get them out and market them before apple...

Thats just my opinion, can't wait to get apple tv.

No movies for sale yet on the Irish iTunes store. I assume that movies will be for sale once Apple TV is finally released. I'd like to see a 'movies for rent' facility too.

I reckon I'll be a customer for Apple TV once its released.

it doesn't play xvid or divx content so I'll be sticking to my modded xbox running XBMC, such a shame

yes it will. it plays anything quicktime does. and you can get a set of plugins called "perian" that enables quicktime to play lots more types of video files

Once its released I'm sure there will be many programs allowing the playing of divx and other media.

Thats great and all, but initial reports suggest you can't install any extra plugins onto it, so unless that changes it's going to bomb when it comes out

I was reading MacWorld earlier and there is an option in the unit for 'Software Upgrade', so there is the possibility that the main features will evolve over time.

One thing they mentioned in the article is a quote from an Apple Rep who stated that the USB slots will NOT allow any external media drives to be plugged into them.

Is there a DVD drive on the AppleTV? It is seriously missing one of them too. :(

I was all up for getting AppleTV but i will probably leave it lay for at least a year. There is bound to be a superiour product released in the near future, (the curse of major first mover disadvantage and all that...)
