    Hi guys,

Curiousity gets the better of me. Just wondering why recording RTE1, 2 and TV3 takes up more space on Sky+ than any of the other channels. I presume its down to the way its encrypted or something.

    Just wondering :)

I think it's because the 4 Irish channels have a transponder practically to themselves, so their is no mass over-packing of channels, so they aren't fighting for bandwidth. I have never seen digital break-up on any RTÉ channel on Sky, yet the BBC and ITV's channels are almost always blocky and distorted in some way or another almost all the time.

RTÉ's picture on Sky is always brilliant and beats the 5 main UK channels hands down. The extra space it takes up on Sky+ though is a bit of a downside, but for much better looking recordings, it's definitely worth a few extra %.

as Paddy C says, it takes up more space as the picture is better. nothing to be frowned upon

Upgrade your HDD. I got a 250GB HDD and mostly everything is 1%. I've got pages and pages of recorded programmes.

I never keep programmes over 2 weeks max
I just use it to record two things at once or when im out so I can watch them later
It would be a different case if I was actually able to get it off the sky box onto my computer

Simple, RTÉ has one of the highest bandwiths on satellite and best pictures, not compressed to hell like most of the other channels!

Does the Beeb use the same data rate for all its regional varients of BBC1 and 2 ?

I always thought it would be a good idea to update the digibox software in such a way that it would be possible to switch all BBC1/2/ITV viewers over to the London region during networked programming (i.e. most of the time) Then the local streams could be dropped and the bandwidth on the London/Engalnd could be increaced to give a decent picture.

Another waste of bandwith is all those interactive and test streams the Beeb transmit which spend most of the time just transmitting wierd logos or duplicates of the programming on the main channels.

At least to RTE's credit they transmit a decent picture on satellite -pity only $ky subscribers get to see it

This is a good site for comparing bitrates; http://www.linowsat.de/0282/all/0282.shtml

I've never seen evidence of poor bitrate on BBC except blockiness on badly aligned dish.
