Creating a back up of all my files

Hi, So I just got an external HD for my bday, and would like to back up my laptop on it. How should I go about this? Is it just a case or copy and paste or how should I do this? (I know this seems pretty simple, but I am!)

You can just drag and drop the files using Windows Explorer or sometimes external hard drives come with backup software, if you want a more automated process.
