Auris. Much better engine in the 1.4 Auris than in the 1.4 Golf. Also the Auris is a newer design.

THe Auris looks really really nice!!
TBH if you are only looking for something reliable and stylish then go for the Toyota!!

Its the choice between a golf what has proven to be one of the more unreliable hatchbackes lately despite the volkswagon reputation or the unproven Auris from a manufacturer with an excellent reputation.

I don't agree it looks good, I think The Auris also looks very bland...
Its going to look really bland in a few months when the things are everywhere.

There is a reason Toyota has all those "arty" dark shots in it press coverage :)

I think the Auris looks lovely, I'd just be worried about the build quality. Drove the old model Corrolla and it was a real flimsy yoke. Bits of plastic falling off everywhere.

I'd still go for one over the 1.4 Golf, and I'm a VW man.

basing it exclusively on aesthetics id go for the golf, the auris is basically a corolla hatch and it looks so boring!! the inside looks ultra depressing also

I would go for the Auris for the following reasons...

Golf is to be replaced next year with MK6 Golf, no point in buying one now as it will depreciate more.
Engine in 1.4 Golf is quite possibly the worst engine ever put into a car in terms of power.
Auris come with a MP3/WMA player as standard.
Auris will be cheaper than Golf for servicing and parts.

the Auris looks like the corolla that went before it... zzzzzzzzzz. Automotive kitchen appliance.

MK6 Golf won't been seen in Ireland in 2008.

Build quality will be compromised too to bring it down price wise.

2008? Yup, next year sounds about right :) Welcome to 2007 Bluetonic! :p

Neither car are interesting to look at.

And what about the Golf, looks like the one before it, and the one before that and the one before that? See the trend even the MkVI will look similar, nothing special to look at either. Typical German car, if you want one with decent spec or any sort of half decent performance you have to pay for a mid or high spec model.

75/80bhp from a 1.4 litre engine in 2007 is shocking, almost as bad as selling the old 8 valve 1.6 litre engine in a claimed premium car called the A4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Granted Bazz, neither car look too interesting in base/standard guise, I give you that... but in my humble opinion, anybody who goes and buys a Corolla or whatever its called now is just not interested in cars... and that is fair enough too. Different strokes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

If it's one or te other, it's not that clear cut. The Golf has standard aircon, and the dealers are starting to soften and give good discounts. The Auris hasn't standard aircon, only on Luna and Sol models, and dealers are getting good money for them. I'd go with the Toyota simply because it's safer, the engine's livlier, the warranty's longer, and the reliability is likely to be better, and it should be worth more or less the same as the Golf second hand

Fair enough but I see people who buy a 1.6 Audi A3/A4 or BMW 316i in the same light. Bought purley for the badge and kudos image that comes with them.

To be honest Joe you could also argue that anyone looking at 1.4 litre cars in general is not interested in cars, whether it be a Corolla, Golf, Almera or Focus, etc.

Some amazing pic's of the manufacturing factory. In the same position as yourself,I have an 04 golf and thinking of trading up. Now seeing as a new/modified golf is on the cards maybe next year I might wait...

OP - have you considered the Kia C'eed 1.4. In my opinion, you'd be mad not to consider it.

Thanks guys. Got some really usefull tips here.
Have decided to go for the Auris due to the fact that its new and the Golf is being replaced next year. Also, the Golf is an 80bhp and the Auris is 97bhp.
The Kia Ceed looks impressive but its not that much cheaper than the Auris and the Auris will be easier to sell on. Thanks again for the help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,220 ✭✭✭✭Lex Luthor

would have expected the cee'd to be a little cheaper than it is. it looks basically from the outside like the previous corolla hatch.

the 1.4 petrol cee'd is 109bhp though and it has 4yrs more warranty, which will make it an attractive 2nd hand sale in 4yrs time.

The Auris looks so well designed inside. Go for the Auris but get a 1.6

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 209 ✭✭Mojito

I would have picked the Auris too. The interior does look nice as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

1.6 only available on top spec Auris Sol. Nice Dual VVT-i engine, but ultimately not worth the extra cash.

Whatcar gives VW Golf 4/5 Stars
FOR : The Golf is fast, fun and has an engaging drive. Build quality is superb, safety kit is good and it's spacious, too.
AGAINST : It's expensive compared with its rivals with similar performance.

Whatcar gives Toyota Auris 3/5 Stars
FOR : The Auris has a roomy cabin, with space for five. It's well priced, affordable to own and we expect it to be reliable.
AGAINST : It isn't as classy or refined as the best cars in this class and the looks, cabin and drive are bland.

I drive an 2006 VW Golf 1.6, I've driven 23,000 KMs in 8 months and have not had one single problem, its the best family sized car I have owned. Toyota make good cars, so either would be a good choice.

Can the Golf do no wrong? Let the motoring magazines drive 22 grands worth of Golf over here and see how impressed they are!

? what difference would that make, the relative prices in the UK from model to model are similar to here so I don't see what difference they would see driving an Irish spec car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,366 ✭✭✭ninty9er

In fairness the UK m arket is entirely different in taste terms. I believe the Corolla isn't even going on sale there while it's already selling in big numbers here and I think the Avensis sells about 95% liftback in that market too so what UK magazines say is to be taken with a pinch of salt...

As long as the car was made in the same factory does it matter in which country the car is tested, they will be driving the exact same car, I don't get your point.

Well the original poster wanted a Toyota Auris Vs VW Golf comparison, thats what I posted, the opinion of a well respected car magazine which has test driven both cars.

again what difference does what sells best in a particular market make to reviews of one car against another? It might help them pick which ones to review but beyond that I can't see why you need your pinch of salt. As long as the spec is similar to here they are a decent resource to have available..

Why don't you do a test drive in both cars before deciding which one to buy. I can't see the next VW Golf arriving in Ireland until at least 2009. Even if the new model hits Germany in 2008 it won't arrive here until at least 6 months later. Anyway you should never buy a new car the minute it hits the market. They are usually the worst built as the workers are still getting used to working on the new model. Believe me, I worked on the production line in BMW for 9 years.

My point is, Motoring magazines rarely test VW's in base form as we know it.

If that is the case, then wouldn't the same apply to other cars in the same class.

It's a known fact that the 1.4 Golf has one of the most appalling reliability records there is. Valve guide seals, valves and valve guides, even pistons and rings. Oil consumption, basically..........which FU's the MAF too, and then the Cat..........the list goes on.

    See here too: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054957101&referrerid=

I have an article in a trade journal on all the probs, so it's no secret. Try local independant garage for an opinion, not a main dealer btw........

Don Jose - your car is a 1.6 - not prone to the same problems.

I've owned 1.4 golfs since 1998. Two MK IVs and now a MK V.
I've driven 250K kms in that time without a single problem.
So I am pretty happy with their reliability.

The reason I go for this model is that I can upgrade it every three years for the new model for around 8K euros.

The fact that it has 1.4 engine (and a crap one at that) doesnt bother me as I spend most of my time stuck in traffic going the exact same speed as chaps with 3 liter BMW or what ever.

The interior build quality in the corolla (up to the AE110 2001 shape anyway) is 90% the same dash as in the AE100 shape from 1992 apart from the radio area. My father in law was a corolla man true and true until buying a Irish car - non import) '99 AE110 Corolla (Terra spec) that turned him off them. The dash and seats were very basic for a "modern" car and it rattled terribly, centre console shelves fell out, dash and console bulbs went - fair enough every car has problems but these small hard to fix things IMO are more annoying. He's still a toyota man but has gone back to a '95 corolla instead and will be buying an Avensis as they seem to be better built.

Parkers give a good reviews and 4 stars to both cars. See the links below.

    Toyota Auris

    Volkswagen Golf

Love the new VW Golf ad on radio that takes the p*** out of the Auris ad.

The woman goes back to her 08 Golf because she's disappointed her new Auris 'just isn't a Golf'

Throwback to the VW ads in the 80s.

Even sounds like the same voice actors for the earlier Toyota ad.
