I have a my girlfriends laptop which has recently died.

When connected to the mains the charging light doesn't even come on.

This sounds like a dead battery to me or has someone seen this before with an alternate solution

    cheers in advance

I'd agree with you, though the possibility that the problem lies with the charger exists as well.

Does it work if you leave it on mains power?

Not sounding like battery trouble anymore.

I think you'll have to give Dell a call and get them to come out (or send the laptop back), could be a fried board or bad power supply.
