    Sony Board Room:

Guy 1: So its nearly time to release the PS3 in Europe.
How can we screw them this time.

Guy 2: Oh oh i know! Lets strip the console of backwards compatibility!
That will help us keep the price down.
    MMMMMMM $$$$$$$$$

Guy 3: Should we pass this saving on to the European consumers that have waited so patiently?

All: HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Guy 2: No way we have lost a fortune selling the PS3 in Japan & the U.S.
Its time to make $$$ off of Europe!

Guy 1: Thats a great idea!

Guy 2: Hey look this country E-I-R-E-Land!

Guy 3: Its pronounced Ireland and what about it?

Guy 2: Well they bought shed loads of Playstation 1 & 2's.

    Guy 3: So?

Guy 2: Well lets go mad and only let the 60gb version be onsale at launch
    and charge an extra €30.

Guy 3: Why the extra money for less features?

    Guy 2: Because we can!
We **** on europe every time and they still buy every thing we throw
    at them.

    All: Here, here!!

Sorry for my new rant style!
Sony really gettin to me as of late.
More money = Less features? Why?

And the worst thing? I still pre-ordered one last sat.
I should kick my own ass!!!

Yup no PS3 for me for a while. I really only want a next gen (well I have a Wii) for GTA IV so far, and that will come out the same time on Xbox. Also PES 7.

I agree this is a total piss take on Sony's part, and if this is the case with all EU consoles that we will be receiving, then this obviously was known for quite some time before they decided to drop it on us, which is amazingly enough, after the brunt of the pre-orders have been taken, and now they won't be offering a list of compatible titles until the day of launch.Bunch of arsé biscuits if you ask me.

I seriously considered taking my deposits back when I first heard this, but after I took a day to calm down, I just said when I get it home, I'll update, and try all my titles, if a ridiculous amount of them don't work, I'll take it back for a full refund within 28 days. And wait until the price is what I deem fair for a console that's inferior to what we were originally promised.

I e-mailed Sony in disgust when I read this first,(Completely civil).
And surprise surprise, no reply.Europe put up with the delay, the higher price tag, and now we are expected to put up with this.
That's just complete and utter bollox. If we were told this originally, or were actually given a price cut for this, then maybe it would be excusable, or more excusable than this anyway.

If a majority of my titles don't work I will be bringing my console back, either until the price is right for what I'm buying, or until my titles are supported by the emulation software.Sony literally have just crapped all over all their loyal consumers who bought the PS1 and the PS2, and then went out and bought a massive library of game for both consoles. That's appreciation for you isn't it?

I hope for Sony's sake as well as my wallet's, that they do something smart about this, and make the updates regular, if it's anything like the amount of time it takes Microsoft to release them, and even then it's only for two titles, then that's it.Sony need a serious wake up call and I hope they get it.

Why is this such a shock to everyone?

Here is an article from June 2006, one of many mentioning how Sony planned to eventually remove the PS2 from hardware and replace it with software emulation once they had the emulator running at a satisfactory level. They're now at that level and it's coinciding with European launch. Believe me - the US and Japan will be getting this change too.

So the PS3 will play PS2 games through emulation, exactly the same as the 360. And the same way as the Wii handles N64 games(which you have to pay for again even if you own them). The Wii has better compatibility with Gamecube games of course because the architecture has remained the same, if that wasn't the case they certainly wouldn't have backward compatibility, 4 previous generations of 'crapping all over their loyal customers'(or is it only called that if you're talking about Sony?) is a testament to that.

Sony's PR is a disaster. Time and again lately I see them doing the same things as their competition and getting completely slated for it.

"once it has finished development of a proper software-based PS2 emulator."

A "limited range" of PS2 titles doesn't sound like its ready.

Microsoft were slated for the crappy backward compatibility on the 360 and they continue to be slated everytime they update the list of games that are compatible because it always seems like they are doing the bare minimum. it was a bad idea when they did it and it's a bad idea now when sony are doing it. I'm pissed off as it is that I have to keep my old xbox around to play the games that won't play on the 360.
As for nintendo, I'm suprised there is any backward compatibility on their machine at all. The only reason for that is because it is not much of a leap from the gamecube. And I refuse to buy old N64 games again just to play them on the wii.

    My sentiments exactly.

Well, maybe because we were only told now, after we have all pre-booked a system, we didn't know was changed. And Sony obviously knew it for a long time, and chose to tell us now.And why are you bringing up Nintendo?Nobody mentioned them, and when you take into account that Nintendo until now, never even mention BC for any of their consoles, you can't even use it as a comparison. The VC games are completely optional, and were never promised as something for free and as standard.

Of all people, I'm not one to criticise Sony for their moves with the Playstation, but this well and truly is a joke, at least the early adopters should have got the original model, you know? The one we thought we were booking?

See this is where I differ. I rate a product on the merits of the product. Not based on what some PR person did or didn't say. And taken for what it actually is, without all the PR crap, the PS3 isn't any worse a deal than the other consoles. Sony went over the top with claims they made in the past but so what, nobody should base their judgements on that, they should rely on objective journalists and try for themselves before they buy anything.

I can understand people who preordered and didn't realise the hardware was going to change, but if it matters that much I'm sure you've reasonable grounds to get a refund on your preorder if you want one.

I already mentioned my plan in the fourth paragraph of my first post in this thread.I wasn't comparing it to the other consoles, you think due to this news I'm going to fly off to 360 land?Hell no!!!I wasn't comparing the Playstation 3 to the Wii or the 360, I was comparing it to itself, or what it was originally supposed to be.The Playstation 3 is the most desirable console to me, and as a Playstation 3 it has the most merits, but not as a full Playstation 1, 2 and 3 game player, like it was originally supposed to be.

And what do you mean it's not about what PR's say?
It very much is all about what we are told.
If we were not told anything then that would be fine, but we were, and we were told that we would have nearly full BC, it may not be important to everyone, but it's important to a lot of us.You can't give out about people giving out about it!
They have every right to, as what Sony have done is wrong!

I know I'm probably going to bite the bullet and just keep my PS3, but only with the thought in my head that there will be regular updates to improve BC.

People shouldnt judge a product on what the manufacturer says it can do. Riiiigggghhhhttt

Oh but it is, our European model is a dumbed down version than the Japanese and American models yet we pay more. It's worse than itself you could say. It's not the BC issue itself that irks, it's the principles.

I'm not terribly enamoured with BC to be honest, didn't bother me on 360, if I ever get a PS3 (and I probably will if MGS4 stays exclusive) it wont bother me on that either. I'm in no rush to throw out the PS2 that has given me thousands of hours of gaming.
