Is my Wii OK in this position?

Yes.. i read the manual and what i understand is recommend is putting the Wii in it's console stand when vertical, and also putting the stand in the little holder.

But i've my Wii lying against the side of a wooden shelf in a cabinet under my TV - as shown here! Won't fit in with the stand under it.

Is there any risk from doing this? In terms of either overheating or constant and prolonged whirring of the console against the wood?

The little holder is more for stupid people to not knock it over when changing discs.

i think the little stand raises the bottom and lets the fan work properly.

I'd say maybe store it there is ok but put it on the stand while playing.

It's grand. Sure the fan is at the back and isn't blocked which is the main thing.

Actually.. the fan is underneath it! :o

Wouldn't recommend it, as ya spotted yourself now, the fan is under the console now, against the wood.

Even lying it on its side, as the recommended positions in the manual show. There are even feet on the side for that. But if you're gonna use gamecube controllers, you need to take off the flaps at the side, as they won't open properly when the console is on its side.

I'm with Damo on this one. I wouldn't advise you to do it. Blocking vent holes is never a good thing, especially when people are reporting overheating Wiis destroying their GPUs.

    Yeah, was thinking that.

Cheers. I took yours and Damo's advice and put it on it's side with the fan facing outwards away from the wood. Quite liked it on it's side though no room for the stand with it! :(

I put mine on the stand at the side of my TV, (a 21 inch CRT) where the tube extends back and creates more room on the stand. Suits me grand sitting there...

    ... could be another option?

Um why can't you put it lying down? There seems plenty of room for it on that shelf...

    I have already.. but:

    (a) Preferred it on it's side taking up less room.
    (b) Girlfriend has some crappy looking ornamental candle thing in my way.. see it to the back of the original picture. It's like a huge tray with 3 candles on it.. with no intention of burning them, for fecks sake!

Test how much she misses them. If see doesn't notice them gone after a while (give it a good 15 minutes) **** them out.

I'd secret them about the house and after she misses them give her a series of clues, each more cunning than the last to their whereabouts. This has the added effect of keeping her occupied so you can play wii for longer... Double points is all i see...
