Digital MMDS box on Digital Cable

I have a Pace DC221KN (NTL) Digital Cable box that was given to me by a friend, they took it from a house that they were renting when their previous tenents left, they had Digital MMDS. This looks to be the same kind of receiver used on new Digital installs on the regular cable network. We have NTL Digital with the older Silver Pace box. I wanted to replace that one with this one that I got since we could send a dedicated output to the TV (we have a HD Flatpanel) and another to the VCR.

Now, I understand that MMDS uses higher frequencies around the 2.5GHz area and a down-converter moves these down to the same range used by regular television signals, and I would assume for financial reasons that NTL would use the same decoders for their digital MMDS and digital cable services. But here is the problem.

I connected the decoder to the cable point in my room, and powered it up, but it doesnt work. A message comes up on the screen saying the service is being upgraded, and it goes through the motions, but then it eventually boots up with the message "No services could be found, power off the receiver, check the connections and try again". Is their an incompatibility with the decoders used in MMDS areas and on cable areas, or can it be sorted with a software update. Also, where can you get a new remote control for these NTL decoders, my friend couldnt find the remote and I dont know if the remote that came with our existing box will work.

I know its probably easier to just ask NTL to replace our decoder, but I dont like the thought of them charging us 50 yoyos for the priviledge, and I am thinking we should hold out for the HD PVR that may eventually come in our direction since we have the TV to take advantage of it.

Only Chorus /NTL can supply a decoder. That box "given" to you belongs to NTL.

Note that Chorus and NTL MMDS systems are currently different.

What you are doing is illegal.

Get a subscription and give them back the pace.

Satellite you own the receiver from day 1, but cable you NEVER own the box and only the cable supplier can supply it.
