    Hi, Guys & Gals.

Have my eye on a 2002 Fiat Ducato 2.8l LWB van. Anyone got an opinion on them?

Fiat vans by all accounts are supposed to be very good and have a better reputation than their cars.

Yepp ...better rust protection than the competition, good engines, decent cabs. Gearboxes (especially fifth gear on some models) can be a weaker point.

Had a couple of them a few years back, 2.8TD is quick and economical 2.5NA is a dog!

Weak point on Ducatos is the doors and hinges, if the side loading door has been abused and isn't running right, don't buy the van. They are virtually impossible to to get running right again. Back doors tend to droop on the hinges also. The doors are very easy to distort, for example slamming them shut against an overfull load!

Is this a generic fault or is it one that can be fixed by tweaking the clutch or are we talking gearbox replacement? If its replacement how long again before fault manifests itself?

This is only hearsay now ...but apparently on some gearboxes fifth is somewhat outside/next to the other four and gets starved of oil and subsequently disintegrates sooner or later.
Having the gearbox oil always filled slightly above max should prevent it.
And if its broken, fifth can be fixed on its own, without having to change the complete gearbox,
