    Hey,

Myself and about 6 of my friends are planning to head over to Queens, New York this summer on a J1. I was on a J1 type experience last summer in Vancouver so I know how important it can be to stay in the right area's and not end up in the not so good ones.

We managed to get a house last summer and would be looking to get one again. We have been told that the Woodside/Sunnyside area is where we should stay. Ideally, we would like to get a house in an area that is lose to amenities and where there will be plenty of students nearby.

My question then is, to anyone who stayed in these area's or somewhere else in Queens, is there particular spots in Woodside/Sunnyside where it is easy to get student housing and we should be looking at? Could anyone put me in touch with someone they previously rented off (alot to know I ask)? I am looking on craigslist at the moment and used it to get my house last summer but we got really lucky last year in that we got a house in a terrific area without really knowing that before we got it and at the moment the isn't much there in the way of summer rentals.

Thanks in advance and any info will be appreciated.

If anyone else has any tips/pointers or experiences from their J1 experience in New York, please share.

I did the J1 to New York last summer and stayed in Woodside in Queens.

We did find it hard enough to get somewhere to stay, do you have any relatives over there that could help you out? Craigslist will give you a good few places, play down that your students though!

You can get into Manhattan in about 30 mins from there on the subway, very handy!

Try to head over early in the summer if your looking for pub or restraunt work, the jobs tend to be snapped up by the end of May. Retail over there is hell, avoid it like the plague!

pm me if you like with questions

I was there on a J1 in '98 and in the end we stayed at a friend of my sisters empty house (he was renovating and selling on) for a month and then after that we struggled until we found a place in Elmhurst (about 3 trains stops from woodside). We had to sign a 6 month lease, gave them bogus home addresses etc, and left owing a months rent but forfeited the deposit.

Terrible way to do things but sure at the time we thought nothing of it.
