Where to do art portfolio preparation?

I choose engineering instead of art when I was starting college (I only did art for one year in secondary school).

But I would like to do a course that would expose me to various elements of art and help me put together a portfolio so I can seriously consider going back to college and making a career of it.

The only place I know of that I can do that in Galway is GTI, but it's full time day course. I would prefer to do it on an evening basis if possible. Does anyone know where else it can be done in Galway?

    Thanks,
    merlin_bar

maybe doing a regular evening art course for a few weeks might help you further make up your mind whether or not you want to pursue it as a career or give you a taster. the best i can do is say check out your local library for classes (they often have noticeboards etc there) or try nightcourses.com/ a google search. maybe you could start your own art group in the area if it lacks one?

    Thanks Snorlax. I'll look into those. I'm hoping to find a part-time version of a portfolio preparation course that's in GTI. It has these modules;

    # Drawing
    # Painting
    # Sculpture
    # Printmaking
    # Graphic Design
    # Combined Materials
    # Art, Craft, Design Appreciation
    # Communications
    # Work Experience

I got accepted but couldn't really afford to give up the day job to do it. It sounds like a great way to test the waters though. I might actually ring a few career guidance councilors in the area and see if they know of anything. I'm twenty seven and feeling a bit anxty career-wise.

    Thanks for the tips!

    Merlin

im thinking of doing the same thing while doing a full time college course and im finding it hard to find evening classes too. G.T.I is the only place that ive found in Galway city, that might but their website is saying: No part-time courses are available at present. Please check back here soon for further updates..
Have you had any luck finding somewhere that does?
im thinking of resorting to going into local secondry schools to try find out do the art teachers no anywhere?

There's also a PLC portfolio course in Moneenagisha (although there seems to be a graphics, computer, commercial bent to it).

As for part time, I thought GMIT did night classes

I'm at gti for the portfolio course and i would think its impossible to find the same amount of work and variety in a part time course over the same length of period. to get a portfolio together part time would take more time, so i'd suggest getting a portfolio together by taking part time classes at night in gti such as life drawing, fine art drawing ect with a mind of putting a portfolio together piece by piece if you can't find a part time course. i've known people that worked at putting a portfolio together by themselves without classes but it took alot of will power.
