Replacing my hard drive

    Hi,

I have an ibook 12" 1.2 G4 and I am planning to upgrade the hard drive from 30gb to 120gb. I know that doing this is quite difficult but I like this kind of thing and I'm fairly patient, plus there is endless help on the internet from people who have already undertaken the task.

I am not so clear on the software side of things. currently my new disk is blank, formatted and in an external usb case. this is all I have. I know I can't boot from usb on this mac so I can't just go ahead and swap the drives. I have to Install the software on the 120gb drive first. How do I do this?

Can I just drag the entire contents of my MacintoshHD to the new drive? I want to keep all my settings, bookmarks adresses etc? is there another similar way?

Do I get out the OSX install disks and Install it, swapping the rest of my files later.

I have read a small bit about disk imaging, I kind of get the idea from downloading files. I'm not entirely sure how to do this and If it will transfer all I want it to?

I have googled this and not found what I am looking for. Probably because I obviously don't know what I'm talking about and don't know any correct keywords.

does anyone have any help or links to help please.

It seems to me that my ibook can physically take a bluetooth module, there's space and internal usb connection in it. I may do this too for the sake of it. there doesn't seem to be too much hassle involved, the bluetooth module is $20 on ebay, its just the cables seemed to be priced out of the market. does anyone have any advice/experience here?

finally I came across acouple of people who upgraded their combo drive to a super drive on this machine. I'm going to look into it, but again any advice, experience or comment would be appreciated.

If only i could jam an internal isight in there.......

And don't bother upgrading the internal drive -- it's too costly & risky. Just buy an external USB DVD-RW drive. Sorted.

You can use Disk Utility's restore feature to copy over the contents of the hd. Select the ibook hd as the source and the usb drive as the destination. Couldn't be easier. This is how I backup.
