Irish Import Fees

    Have I got this one right? I've tried looking up the charges on the Revenue.ie website a couple of times but it would honestly be easier to divine the answers with sheep entrails.....
    :rolleyes:

    Anyway, you get charged both VAT (21%) and then an import duty fee (4.6%?) on top of that on the combined Item and shipping cost. Is that right?

    So for example, a €250 item + €50s&h would be:

    Total Cost..............€300

    + 21% VAT..........€63 -> €363

    + 4.6% Imp Fee......€16.70 -> €379.70

    So the final cost if you are caught for duty is almost €80 above the actual price.
    :mad:

    I've been caught for it once or twice already. Has anyone else regularly been charged for this or do you sometimes get away with it?

    Yep, bang on.
    I assume you're talking about the states.

    Duty is charged first on the cost of the product plus shipping then VAT is charged at 21% (or 17.5% in UK) on top of this. Below is a link to the EU TARIC which shows the duty rates for all products. It's not the easiest to navigate as they don't use trade names for description of products.

    if it's an expensive item, it's an excuse for a holiday. I recently used a holiday as an excuse to buy an expensive item. Either way, it's all good :D

    Edited the original to bring it to 21% VAT. An extra €10! I could buy stuff with that tenner!
    :mad:

    The reason I ask is because I am looking at getting a Bronica on eBay and US prices are significantly better then EU ones. Up to €100 in the difference even taking cheaper EU shipping into account. I'm still thinking of taking the risk of the importing fees though.....
