Earliest Scary Memory ?

In the "Does anyone actually like clowns?" thread, I noticed that a lot of people who had a fear of clowns seemed to think it was caused by a bad experience with clowns at a young age (and watching "IT", but thats another story).

This got me to thinking what is my earliest scary memory ?

Picture the scenario, a lovely sunny day in Fota wildlife park (Cobh, Cork). I'm about 2-3 years old. Having been in the park for about 10 minutes my father points out a flock (is that the correct multiple?) of Emu's coming down the road.

As they drew closer one of the emu's left the group and came running towards us, directly at me in my buggy. Drew its head back and snapped at my face .... taking my dummy clean out of my mouth before running off with it.

Terrifying stuff. I remember being completely shocked for a few seconds before panicing. As you may quess I now have a complete hatred for Emu's I often go to Fota, look into the Emu enclosure and think about the joy that smashing their eggs with a hammer would bring.

Anyone else care to share ?

Falling onto an old lawnmower after loosing my balance walking alongside my dad mowing the grass. It wasn't so much dangerous, as it was just falling onto that roaring machine that got me and the sound of lawnmowers distressed me for awhile after, though not for long. I did sustain a really bad burn from the engine...

I remember once I was in my pushchair being brought up to Northside shopping centre by my mum. It was beginning to get dark, and one of the clouds above me looked like some sort of mutilated teddy bear head and it scared me nearly to death. Worst thing was, it was there for the whole 30 minute journey, and I just sat there terrified looking up in the air thinking it would come after me.

Yes, I was scared by a cloud, but in my defense, I was in a pushchair, so I must have been young. (definitely no older than 24 anyway)

I got my head stuck in the gate outside my house. My Dad said that the fire brigade would have to come to remove me and I was bleedin terrified! Everyone walking down the street was in stitches laughing at me and I was there visualising the fire brigade cutting me free, or being left there all night...

Another time I got stuck in the swing in my back garden for hours...then there was the time I was trapped in a wardrobe when I climbed into it and it fell forwards...getting trapped in the tyre swings in the playground was also pretty terrifying...

Watching the Exorcist when I was six. My Dad brought it home from Zhivago video shop in galway one Sunday afternoon, becuase it had no cert on it, he thought it was fine, my mother was not in the house and the time, it had an awful affect on me, and still does. Even though I'm 31 now. Couldnt sleep in my bed for 2 weeks after it.

You know how people say 'I just spat out my coffee', and you know that that didn't really happen? Well, I don't have coffee, but I do have a nasty cut on my lip, that splits when I smile excessively. So thanks a bunch....jerk. :)

Big scary dog pitbull thing not on a lead coming over and sniffing my face. I am still terrified of big dogs. The other day I was walking down the road, one was walking by on a lead, and when that happens, I cant concentrate or talk until they pass me by.

Being trapped in a dark dank cave for months on end. Finally got used to my surroundings until all of a sudden I was being pushed out by an irresistable force. Cried my fcuking little eyes out.

    So yeah caves for me.

I used to be scared ****less of the Steve Austin Action man character. You know the one with the magnified eye and hand that could lift extreme weights. I thought he would kill me if I didn't eat my dinner. My Dad used to leve him on the kitchen counter.

Eek just remembered the scariest thing that has haunted me since a young age...does anyone remember that ad for milk where these kids are hanging out with this dirty great big wooden man singing about how kids have more bones than grown up's and such....dear lord, what was going on, what was this big wooden fella doing with those kids?! Scared the life out of me every time I saw it, no wonder I drank so little milk!

I am the very same as you.

When I was quite young some asshole decided it would be a right laugh to allow his Doberman to pin me to the ground. The dog was muzzled alright, but fúck me, that was scary.

I hate all dogs, from the small furry creratures to the big horse like ones.

The earliest scary memories you have are from when you were 11 and 12?

You must have been one tough toddler.

My earliest scariest memory was being carried on my father's shoulders as a two year old back in 1973.

This black-dude came up to me (uber rare in early 70's Dublin!), he was tall enough to me face-to-face with me on my dad's shoulders and said something to me and I freaked out!

I've since related this story to a couple of black-guys I've worked with in London, usually in the pub, and it's always made them crease up with laughter.
