    Couple more links...

    http://www.robgalbraith.com/public_files/Canon_EOS-1D_Mark_III_White_Paper.pdf

Any idea why they went with the 1.3 fov crop? The Mark II had full frame, didn't it?

    Anyway, a bargain at $3999:D

    hmmm 10fps
The Mark II had full frame, didn't it?
Nope, afaik it was a 1.3x crop too.

The 1dsMKII was the full frame.

my bad! Anyway, it's largely irrelevant as I'll never have one so I don't need to worry at all about crop or no crop...

Going through that white paper (cheers cambo_gueno) there is also a mention of 580EX II Speedlite on the way, and DPP3.0

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

At just over €3000 that is not a bad price at all. Anyone want to buy a 5d??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

Heres a full list of the new stuff. Just when I was beginning to get my head around the 580ex too :)

When you consider that it has a built in motordrive, and presumably, battery pack it is not a million miles away from the 5d at all price wise. Weird! Can the $3999 quoted on dpreview be right when the Mark II is on sale for $6,800 at B&H at the moment??

EDIT: Sorry, mixing up my 1D's :_(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

Lots of new improvements, now to start saving :)
The Live View feature is an odd one, but useful for the journo types out there. The 19 cross type AF sensors right out to the edge of the frame will be great for little birdies and action in general, and will put an end to the 'focus and recompose' errors that sometimes creep in.
The front/back focus adjust will (hopefully) ensure that slightly off calibrated lenses will not have to be sent back to.
Bah I'm sounding like an Canon ad man.

Anyway, hopefully all this tech will enable whoever buys it to get shots they previously couldn't.

Hardly. In the wonderful world of Camera Exchange Rates $3999 is actually equal to EUR5,500 :D

I think a trip too bh in a few months is in order were I'll trade up my 1d mII and 16-35mm for the newer versions providing they live up to the hype. I hope the new lens is alot sharper in edges for me to part with my current version, suppose just wait and see what the reviews are like on the web.

Make that 2 for sale - I love my 5d, but I would change for one of these in an instant if I got a reasonable price. If anyone makes a good / reasonable offer, there could be a 1dMII for sale also.

Ability to download to a sub drive straight from the camera....
Ability to calibrate forward/back focusing for a given lens AND have the camera remember it......
voice record button in a more accessable location.....
Dont need to hold down buttons making adjustments..... (the 5d was miles ahead of the 1d in this department).

Oh Yeah.... Where to I sign?
    Merv.

Much as I'd be all over it like an STD these new cameras can throw up some unexpected results. Banding and odd colour shifts were not uncommon in the original 1DmkII at high iso's, and seeing as this thing will shoot at a ferocious rate and goes to 6400 you'd want to see if any issues arise before you sell your soul.
That said I think I'll get one and leave it on the shelf next to the 20D.

I thought everything coming from the States get a 100% increase, just to penalise us for living on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. That should work out a $8000. That sounds about right. Strange with the 1.3x crop. Maybe they are standardising with the other 1D.

I think a lot of 5d's will come into the 2nd hand market when this hits the shops properly, even though it would mean losing full frame for a 3 inch lcd and 10fps, 45 af points and all the other 1d jazz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 410 ✭✭mervifwdc

The full frame is certainly nice, and If I was pretty flush I would keep the 5d for the "about town / social events / travel" type stuff, and leave the 1's for the sports shooting, but having 3 camera's would be a bit flash (I only have 2 eyes) ;-)

Isn't this a replacement for the 1D Mark IIN (the 8mp sports/reporter camera that came out about the same time as the 5D), rather than the 1Ds Mark II? (FFS Canon, fire the people in charge of coming up with these bloody names). I think the betting was more on a 20+mp Digic III replacement for the latter

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

I read the white paper last night. Holy $hit. This is some machine. And I say again at an amazing price. Unbelievably well thought out. It's no wonder you see so many white lenses at all the big events. Here's betting that that is going to increase.

As for 20Mp. Is there 5 photographers in this country that need that detail?? Lunacy me thinks. Unless you want to do prints the size of a wall 10Mp is loads.

Here here.. I think somehow I'd manage to live with 10mp at 10fps with the build quality of a 1 series. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

It's a bit of kit alright.
I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of difference the increased tonality of the 14 bit capture system can provide to the final print.
The prices being touted about are STG£3050 (Park Cameras) and €4292 (ac-foto).
    Boards.ie trip to B&H anyone? I'm buying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,373 ✭✭✭Fionn

looks like a great piece of kit all right, i'm sure i'd be familiar with the layout straight off.
the 1 series naming conventions can be somewhat misleading but having said that once you get a 1 series in your hands - everything else just never feels the same again. I've access to a 30D these days but compared to my 1Ds it feels very frail, light and breakable.
I'm sure this camera would exhibit the same sensation.
and what about that fps??? i suppose much higher memory cards will be needed to satisfy this beast!!!

i'll think about buying one in 3 years time ;)

Heh, said that to the missus a couple of weeks ago while walking around central park... "Wouldn't a boards trip to new york be a great idea?" I can imagine us all being strip searched coming back through customs :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

Not such a daft idea. I reckon we would have a €1000 to spare after buying the camera and paying for flights compared to what it will cost here. It will be just over €3000 in B&H. I know, I know, I know the photograph is the main thing but jayzus imagine the fun you would have taking wildlife or sports with it. I'm still trying to get my head around the genius that put the ideas into such a small piece of kit.

Having taken quite a shine to large format printing, I would have no problem whatsoever with a 20 megapixel camera... :D

Probably not, but there is a pro market out there that'll need that sort of enlargement capability (think advertising for one). There's a fairly healthy (and deep pocketed) market for 40Mp medium format backs. A more practical problem is that that sort of resolution would probably start exposing the limits of lenses, even L lenses, which were afterall designed with the resolving power of 135 film in mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,008 ✭✭✭rabbitinlights

Can someone list/explain the canon camera range from the 400D up, Im totally lost with the names and the 1.3 crops etc.

    S.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

    err..

    400D - 1.6x - 8.2mp
    30D -1.6x - 8.2mp
    5D - full frame 12mp
    1D - 1.3x - 8.2mp
    1Ds - full frame - 16.7mp

Bit of guesswork with the mp of the 5D and 1Ds

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,620 ✭✭✭Roen

    I think the 1D is 4Mp and the 1DmkII and 1DmkIIn are 8.2Mp. The 400D is 10Mp. The 1Ds is 11 and the 1DsMkII is 16.7.
Good to see Canon employed a straight forward naming structure :)

Check here, I may be wrong.http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=15&stype=1&si=&perpage=24&sort=7&cat=15&ppuser=

I agree. Reading my post again, I didn't really mean that 20Mp was lunacy but the idea for the vast majority that 20Mp is better than 10Mp is lunacy.

Lol @ the DCS1 :) It probably cost a fortune as well when it came out.

Arrrgh ... new dilemma ... was thinking 5d with 16-35 F2.8L... but this is very tempting ... I can ditch the 16-35 and stick to my 12-24 for now ... not quite so wonderful ...

Can someone please explain (I'm too lazy to google) ... for my money 14 bits v 12 Bits is better than having more megapixels of 5d v 1d MkIII?? right ?? or am I mad ... if you have far better grey scale possibilities you get more dynamic range ... whereas a little more detail for the 3 or so Mpixels in the 5d are not going to make a huge difference ???

In any case I priced flights and accomodation to Hong Kong for a 4 day May bank holiday ... €800 with accomodation ... tempting ... though I may make a week of it and have a look around Kowloon after buying my new babies ... anyone for a long haul boards outing ?

    Nicked from FM

"No. Moving from 12 to 14 bit only increases the number of steps between total black and total white. The amount of light at which the sensor does not capture any light (black) or clips (white) does not change with the number of bits that is used to sample the sensor."

Chuck Westfall on the new camera, probably the only part that is of interest is the fact that he says that Canon are still in the process of finalising price for the Apr release.

Heh, no change form €12,500 based on todays exchange rates. That'd get you a 1D MkIII and a very hefty piece of white glass, and still leave change to go to the pub
