Looked into careers as a pilot a while back. The way it seems to boil down is you pay 80 grand odd on training then pray to god you get a job somewhere. When you get a job the money is good but there is little job security, the industry is so unpredictable. and then when you get past 50 or so you have medical checks every 6 months and the intervals between them keep getting shorter and shorter as you get older meaning you could be out on your arse at any moment.

It would have to be something you are really really passionate about in order to see it through to the end.

It would be stretching it to say I'm "passionate" about being a pilot! I have an assessment for it next week. It'll cost me nothing so I'll head along.

The money is an issue, but I think CityJet pays some of your fees, and then you work for them afterwards. I'm just assuming this, as they're co-sponsoring it.

A year's training in sunny South Africa appeals to me too.

I'm applying for a few jobs at the moment. Realistically, this pilot thing is way down my list. But I won't write it off just yet.

Regarding job insecurity? Hmmm. It's something else to think about, isn't it...

    Cheers for the thoughts, everyone!

I did the assessment there on Thursday. Very interesting! And the people are very friendly, clear and genuine. The aptitude test was kind of fun. Perhaps it won't be as much fun when they phone me with my results, though ;)
