Ebay verification

I thought I was all verified on ebay, i went to the trouble of going through the process (letting them charge a small amount, getting the PIN on my credit card statement etc), and when I log in to paypal, it does indeed say 'status: verified'

However, in a recent transaction with a US seller, i noticed that on the payment screen, where it listed my details, i was down as 'unconfirmed'.

So.... was the whole rigamarole of verifying my account a complete waste of time? i.e. ebay/paypal let me jump through hoops to verify my account, but wont stand over it when it comes to US transactions?

This is very common with Irish accounts and I couldn't figure out a way to fix it. I think it has to do with European credit cards that don't verify the addresses or don't have that feature. If it comes up with a seller, then just let them know before bidding. I had the same problem and only had to explain once to one seller.

Thanks for the info, ive been trying to find the difference between verified and confirmed addresses.

Im quoting this off an ebay page
"Confirmed addresses are those at which a buyer receives his credit card statement"

As far as im concerned, thats what ive bloody done with the whole verification thing - the only way I could have known the PIN they sent on my credit card statement is if I live in the address that my credit card bill goes to......so therefore address is confirmed surely?

Ive mailed paypal to see what the craic is, but i'll be pretty pissed if all that verification rubbish was for nothing, and im being treated like a second class citizen just because I dont live in the UK or US.

    Cheers for the reply

The verification process was not for nothing, you couldn't use your card on Paypal without it. Your address remains unconfirmed because Paypal can not confirm the address of any cardholder outside the US.

Class has nothing to do with it, it's just the way the credit card system works. It more than likely won't make a bit of difference. I've rarely seen a seller ask for confirmed address bidders only, and only from US sellers who may not post outside the US anyway.

Paypal is extremely unflexible when it comes to verifying addresses - especially Irish ones (even worse, rural Irish ones). I've been trying to get my address verified for over a year now (it IS identical to the credit card address), they send that address verification letter out to me, but the instructions to verify they give in there do not work, I've been on the phone to them ages, they seem incapable of understanding where the problem is (even when I explained it several times). I got disconnected several times and ended having to start from scratch with yet another call centre agent, they seem to be unable or unwilling to manually enter "address verified" in their system - in the end I've given up - or at least I haven't tried for a few months. It is bad because, the way I understand it, you lose out on Buyer Protection ...

Its seller protection that you lose out on - i.e. a seller from the US will not be eligible for it if they deal with an unconfirmed address. Hence they can be a little reluctant to deal with international bidders. Which would be fine, except 90% of what I want to buy is from the US.

Anyway, i got a bit of clarification from Paypal themselves, but the gist of it is, its just a policy issue.

In a literal sense - i HAVE confirmed my address, to exactly the same extent as any ebayer with 'confirmed' status (ie through my credit card/bank account billing address), but paypal/ebay are just too lazy to implement whatever process they need to ratify that, not for little old Ireland anyway.

    Cheers for the replies
