    Yeah baby, it rocks!!!

I'm using it, when I get a minute! First impressions are very good. I have a feeling that it is going to become my main imaging programme. there are loads of good tutorials up too, especially Michael Teapes of Rawshooter fame. Just do a google for "Lightroom Tutorials". As an owner of RSP I will get a free copy of Lightroom 1.0 ;_) The learning curve might appear steep but it is easy enough with a bit of practice. It has a zillion little bits and pieces hidden away but I reckon after awhile a person can come up with a workflow that suits their needs.

It organises files now by how they are in your filesystem, and changes you make within Lightroom are made physically, which is awesome

Is it much different, muchmore in it than the beta?

You mean if you change a RAW file you no longer have the original?

No, you can move files within Lightroom and it will actually move them. While it's generally considered a Bad Thing when you're talking about your music collection, it's pretty handy when you're organising 10k+ photos on a NAS, as photo managers that are disconnected from your file system are a pain in the ass.

How are any of these different from Photoshop?

From what Fenster was saying it blows the CS2 raw editor out of the water, for starters. I much get my hands on it and try it

Music Manager or Photo manager I don't see the difference. I dislike any manager thats disconnected from the file system. So I avoid them.

    It doesn't have layers.

I got the beta a while back but didn't have the time to try it out. Got
an email off them yesterday and started to check out the site. It looks
really good, might grab the trial version sometime soon.

There is a good review/comparison with other raw editors on Ars Technica it gives a good overview of the features.

is this software for rating and converting images? Does it do the same thing as iView MediaPro?

Waaaaaaay more. What I have discovered in my limited experimenting is that you can use RAW tools on jpegs too. Things like white balance, drawing detail out of shadows is so much easier now. There is so much in there that it will take a long time to get the complete hang of it. That said, it is still easy to use out of the box. Damn and the winter is nearly over and the long evenings...........

Yep, it's good! Just got my free RSP upgrade too :D It seems a bit less clunky than the beta, though it did crash on me once whan I was trying to rearrange the folders it created from my shoots in the beta.

The library, rating, etc features work very well, and the development module is superb. It's really good for doing mono conversions as well, and the greyscale channel mixer panel in the release version has been expanded to include a few more colours (orange and purple), so more tweaking should be possible.

I haven't really tried any of the web export or print features yet, but as all this stuff is pluggable, people will probably come up with decent templates over time

Would anyone use it in tandem with PS? I had a play around thsi morning and it just seemed far more aimed at quick 'recipe' type processing, and I would normally do a lot of work individual to each picture in photoshop, never mind not being able to have layers and masks to apply changes locally instead of globally to an entire frame. Would you use it purely for organisation and rating, or would that be more of an adobe bridge kind of area? Just not sure if I'm not understanding its purpose, or it just doesn't fit with my workflow (hah, that makes me sound organised!)

If you shoot RAW then Lightroom is way ahead of PS in the control you have. I also find that curves and levels is easier and, for me, more controllable than PS. I have done some stuff in LR that only needed sharpening in PS.

You can also work on jpegs in a similar way to working on a RAW file ant that is fantastic. Things like white balance adjustment can be done wheras that is not possible, in as intuitive a way anyway, in PS.

I posted this likk over the weekend but everyine was off gallavanting around Kilmainham so may have missed them. Good tutorials: http://pictureflow.fileburst.com/_Tutorials/Photoshop_LR/01/index.html

I think the main uses for it would probably be RAW processing, organisation and ease of workflow. There is an option in it to load a selected image in your processing program of choice for further editing..

It'd work for me because I rarely go near photoshop in any kind of detailed way (probably because I dont know how to use it properly). After using the beta, I've seen that it's a gem for working with RAW files, which I take to be it's primary use - i.e. for the professional photographer that doesn't have weeks to spend farting around with each file in photoshop. I've found that it's handy that you can pick up processing settings from one photo and drop them onto others. Nice timesaver.

Cant wait to try it out properly; Going to shoot an event in Dublin entirely in RAW next weekend and try a mixture of Lightroom and Aperture to process the photos. I'll have to buy one or t'other...

    spose it's a rich mans Picasa :D

I use Lightroom for raw processing as it can do a better job than PS (although PS is better for batch work)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Fionn

i've been using Pixmantic since i changed over to shooting mainly RAW and the features in it were pretty good, as Adobe has bought them out no doubt most of those features are incorporated into Lightroom. Haven't had much of a chance to mess with it yet.
I'm sure it can be used for more than just one thing, such as making slide shows or web pages and of course RAW processing and all that. I'd still use PS for a lot of the processing even for different effect filters etc. and also i can load my Dell ICC profile in Pixmantic and PS but not in Lightroom as far as i can figure.
Looks like a very good prog!

After playing around with lightroom last night I reckon it in no way will replace photoshop for a lot of photo editing but for me, it looks like being a better alternative than adobe bridge for sorting and catalogging photos. This is where it really shines. My workflow involves camera raw to fine tune the original file then i would export to photoshop to do the final editing and save as a psd if I wanted to work on it again at a later date. You can do a lot with lightroom , bring up detail in shadows, tone down the highlights, very precise curves adjustments and printing with it is REALLY good . I just did a couple of test prints but was impressed with the ease of use and results. All in all,i'd say it was a fantastic companion to photoshop rather than an alternative. For my purposes anyway. :)

Wow - it's really annoying that you have to buy the Irish version which is a full €60 more expensive, and they don't give you any option to buy an downloadable version and not pay the VAT... I've bought software off the net before and they usually don't care what country you're from. Is there any way of getting around this without having an American address?

'Fraid not. Just count yourself lucky you're not in Germany or France, where they'll probably whack an additional 50% or so onto the price over even the Irish version, if their PS pricing is anything to go by!
