there s a bag of pick a mix in my drawer in work... i think that confirm that im not fasting, and also that i wont be giving up sweeties :p

Doing it for guilt is a stupid reason.
You do it because you believe it serves a purpose, not because of guilt.

I have never done it. Hell, I didn't even know yesterday was pancake tuesday until a short while ago. It is now wednesday night, so I'm not bothered either way.

Same has the the whole don't eat meat on Good Friday. Do it if you believe it serves a purpose, not because your gran or mother tells you.

People need to make up their own minds.

    *grumble*

I'll not eat meat today to prove to myself that I can do that. (the shakes have set in already). I'm also giving up drinking for Lent, again to prove a point. Not fasting though.

make up my own mind??? dude you crazy!!! if i start doing that now where will it all end?? ok from tomorrow onwards im going to make the first step by NOT putting on the cloths my mammy picks out for me!!!!

i gave up beer before to prove a point/try get fitter, didnt really work, i didnt feel overly better despite trainin quite hard. this year its no sweets, not thru guilt or religion, its just a good excuse to cut out the crap!!

No meat today, innit? Yeah, I still go by that. Ain't that bloody hard not to eat meat for one day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,584 ✭✭✭shane86

3 oranges, 3 rashers of bacon and 3 sausages so far. I later plan on eating a steak dinner and in the evning hot dog and chips. Off work at 10pm*, stroll home and ring in a mizonnis

*:A 14 hour work day is pennance enough

Believe it or not the above is pretty much my normal days in take (cooked brekkie, potato and meat for dinner, at least a dozen oranges for the health, 6 odd litres of water, mackers or something after work and a pizza before bed) and yet I still cant rise above 10 stone!)

I think the point of the question is why do it, rather than how difficult it is to do.

Mass mightn't be until 11 in your area. Or people might be going to the evening mass due to work or whatever.

I often go for days without eating meat. But I'm going to relish my breakfast roll and morning ciggie even more than usual today.

Ill eat meat today, couldnt care less.

Anyone care to tell me the reasons behind the not eating meat today?

I made a big shepherd's pie last night, so yes, I will be eating meat today!

Giving up all the good things in life though :(. Bye chocolate, bye sweets, bye crisps... I expect to be in a foul mood for the next week until the withdrawal eases off.

I think it's a compromise from actual fasting

christ how much of your 14 hour day at work do you spend in the toilet??

So far, I've stuck to the non-meat thing. That's more to do with the lack of quality food in my house than any religious reasons. A wonderful lunch of crackers, cheese and yoghurt awaits me in an hour, and the bf has sentenced us to a dinner of 3-in-1 tray - no meat! Least there's some chips in there for the hunger.

On the 12 occasions between the ages of 5 and 17 that school brought us to the church for the ash marking, I cant once recall it being an actual cross. I always just got a big dirty blob.

Very suprisingly my work canteen had a fish option today, Im suprised they even remembered (went for the fish because I liked it more than the meat on offer. And Im already going to burn in hell for the breakfest I had)

    haha :D

I got into the waterholism from about 15, Id a bad attack of acne then, I decided to all but stop drinking soft drinks and load up on water, it worked a treat. I eat the oranges because if I didnt only end up keeping myself occupied eating crisps and bars.

Drink 3 litres max of water a day, any more can be bad for you.

really? i drink bout 1.5 to 2 litres a day, but you also consume equivelent of 2litres in the ingrediants/breakdown of your food every day.i had myself checked for diabetes because i have insatiable (apologies over spelling ) thirst regularly. it also applies to beer :D

Chicken stir fry for dinner today. I'm not catholic, so I see no reason to avoid meat today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,417 ✭✭✭Archeron

Whoops. I wanted to avoid meat today just for the fun of it. Sitting here working away, I burped and the taste of chicken reminded me that the hot chicken roll I had at lunch time kind of ruined that plan.

Can chicken be considered a vegetable?

Have you been hiding in a lab all day? I've seen several people with ashes round campus.

Regards fasting and no meat, by total coincidence I planned to have fish for dinner today, to use up what's in the freezer. I could make chili to stick it to the man so to speak, but, feck it, fish is just hander atm.

    No. Only turkies can.

What makes you think its supposed to be in the shape of a cross? I know it sometimes is, but I have never seen it written anywhere that it should be so. Its a reference to a Jewish custom at the time of Christ when people who were fasting or doing penance would cover themselves in ashes to show as much.

i fast - nothing at all, except water and tea but i don't like the tea idea, think from no on no tea either

    I'm fasting.
I only put one olive in my pre-dinner Martini instead of the usual two.
Sacrifices must be made you know.

When people ask what i'm giving up for lent, I just say meat and they are quite impressed. :D

    Grand sense of humour Tar!

Oh, I was going to ask you... Are the rumours true that veggies scream when they are cut during harvesting?

The only people who would fast on ash wednesday are either old, or prudes. FACT!

The only solace I get from eating bad tasting vegetables is hearing their screams.

Bah, I'm not Catholic so no fasting. One rather nice Peking Duck dinner was had, and the bag of chocolate-covered strawberries while spending several hours playing WoW was great :)
