How do I run Notepad from the command line on Windows XP?

Ive tried notepad, run notepad, notepad.exe and run notepad.exe.
Nothing has worked I just keep getting not recognized as an internal or external command.

It'd be handy if it could be done from the command line.

Thats strange. It should have the environment $Path variable set up to look in C:\windows where notepad.exe is placed. Perhaps notepad moved elsewhere.
On other hand you could use edit.com, dos based notepad editor.

should only have to type "notepad". and it should launch. Do what webmonkey says.

I'd also recommend testing to see if your machine isn't fubar'ed.

Try this. Change to a directory where there is a text file and type the full name of the text file. eg.

    test.txt

    that doesn't open notepad try...

    start test.txt

    that doesn't work type

    set path

    and paste the results here.
