Amazon now charges £5 postage for a book?

    They are CRAZY.

So where else can I get books? Eason charges €6, which I think is pretty crazy too, and they keep their book prices a lot closer to the RRP.

Does anyone know why amazon.ie doesn't exist? I've just emailed them asking, and moaning about the price of postage too. I feel like they've taken me hostage, because in many cases, even with the absurd postage prices, Amazon is cheaper. ("Ooh, I live in England and want £25 of books: free postage!" "Ooh, I live in Ireland - like, 10,000 miles away -- and want £25 of books: add £12 to your order now. Muahahaha.") Why? Don't they want our custom?

This is nothing new. Amazon shipping prices have always been a tad unfair. There is no amazon.ie but there are others like bookdepository.co.uk has free delivery worldwide.

They look really good. Are they totally legit?

They have a 'buy from Amazon' button right next to their own buy button?

They are, I have dealt with them a number of times. They work with Amazon if they don't have a particular item in stock instead of making people wait.

I've just checked what all the bloggers say about them too, and everyone raves. Thank-you for pointing out their existence!

    *places order*

    Yeah, BookDepository is great.

I've never liked the Amazon postage rates for stuff sent to Ireland, and then offering Super Saver postage discounts and free delivery to UK residents.

amazon.de do English books and charge 6euro flat rate ....

haha, off topic slightly but I notice the lazy bastards still haven't changed that charges table, since it's telling us that Electronics & Photo items (Republic of Irealand only) is still available.

On topic and in defence of amazon, the charge isn't "£5 per book", it's £4 per order and £1 per item....in case you haven't noticed, books are pretty heavy and they have to pay royal mail to deliver them to here and then an post gets it's cut for the "final mile"
Any amazon book orders I ever did I always made sure to build up a large order and avail of the rates.
Super saver delivery to the UK is annoying (and it's only a £15 spend now)but I've used it a few times for electronic goods to a mate's house in NI and on both occassions items were missing or lost (which has never happened to me down here after paying for delivery)....again amazon were quick to resend or refund (my choice)

As for amazon.ie? I honestly don't think they want the hassle...

play.com also do books - free delivery. Used them loads of times, no problems. Just make sure to select Euro as the currency for delivery to Ireland. Also, books don't carry VAT so there shouldn't be any probs with customs ..
Amazon.de now has flat postage rate as well - as Parsi said - handy for American paperbacks (usually cheaper than the British published).

At the end of the day the cost of delivery is built in somehow into the price you pay.

In Ireland the cheapest service for companies sending large volumes of parcels is about €6+ VAT for sending to UK best price for a single parcel is in the region of €9 + VAT and probably similar from UK to Ireland.

Obviously if the item you purchase is small the price may be a small bit lower and this is easily absorbed (built in) into the price of large items or on large orders.

I prefer the single shippng charge method where you have a single set fee no matter how many items are sent to a single address - the more somone orders on a single order the better the value to both the consumer & supplier!

As for Amazon entering Ireland - not a chance, market far too small for a stand alone operation.

This post is only seven years old - ie pre Parcel Motel ! Find free UK shipping and use PM.( Although I note all the linked retailers will want £2.50 postage for books ) It will still cost you 3.50 euro to have it sent on. Just beware that for multiple orders some retailers will split the order into more than one package so be sure and have the 'group my order together' box ticked in your personal account on Amazon.

It can be cancelled as said above, if you are quick enough. If not you have a 7 day cooling off period but you have to pay the cost of sending it back, which will be a lot.

Always check your checkout price before agreeing. If you order over £25 worth you get free shipping, you can bump up your basket with stuff, I get cheap t shirts or something.

I am going to lock this thread as its so old, in future please start a new thread.
