Firefox/Safari crashing

Our favourite browsers have been acting up of late - they do not seem to be as stable as before. Here are the details (yea, a little old but fits the job so far):

    - PB G3 (Lombard) w. 512MB RAM
    - 10.3.9
    - Firefox v1.5.0.7, v2.0.0.1

Problem: Firefox runs OK just after boot up. Because the machine is a PB, we do not shut down MacOS, rather quit the browsers, put machine into sleep, and re-activate and re-launch Firefox/Safari. That's when the dreaded coloured beachball appears and then the apps crash. This annoyance repeats even as the PB is rebooted.

Memtest reported no memory issue, and I've also ran DiskUtility already (repair permissions), so short of re-installing the OS, wonder if anyone can give me more suggestions. CHeers!

Have you tried the usual stuff like deleting preferences, clearing cache/cookies, etc? Have you installed any 3rd party apps/extensions that might be interfering with the browsers? Like a plugin?

I had this for a while on a Intel Mac, tracked it down to a ram chip that had gone bad, Once removed and replaced it was back to normal.

    Might be worth a look

    Thanks for the tips, guys.

Memtest reported nothing unusual, and while clearing out the preferences folder did help a little, I found that the problem returned quickly later. Finally gave in to OS re-installation and the problem went away. This time round, I made sure I had a backup (using SuperDuper) of the entire boot disk to save me time and effort from installing from the CDs.
