Ok so here is the story!!

Me and the GF decided to get SKY installed for her father for a christmas presant. He doesn't have a phone line and doesn't need one.
There was a flyer going around about a crowd that do the install even without the phoneline. We rang them up and the got all the details and said when the card comes in the post ring us up and we will collect it and activate it etc.
Got the card before christmas and they took it away and got it sorted.
The installer came out in January and installed the whole setup but her dad was left without his usual cable tv stations!1 So he rang up the local suppliers for that and they came out and found out that the sky installer cut the pipe cord and used that for digital so his SKY was disconnected and his pipe reconnected. Now we rang the SKY crowd again informed them of what happened and they said the would send the installers out to sort it!!

Now its over 3 weeks now and after they promisedthat they would be out day after day after day I have gotten sick of it!!
The crowd promised they would be out last Thursday, Friday and again yesterday!! The installer has been working on the same house for the last week as far as I am being told and TBH I am sick of dealing with them!! THey are even refusing to answe the phone to us!! Its a landline number diverted to a mobile. SKY themselves can't do anything for us on the issue so where do I go from now??

this all sounds a bit iffy to me.

your sky card should never have to leave the house they activate it when they install your system because the box and card need to be registered together as they are paired together by sky when you order

no matter what is said you need a land line for sky, my father installs them and its to do with updates and to make sure that your not setting it up in your house then disconnecting the whole thing and giving it to your local sports club who can now watch matches etc at a lower price where you get a comission, sky will gove you a few months grace but then they just disconnect and will charge you a reconnection fee if your not black listed with them

where is your direct debit been paid into? it has to be SKY anything else is wrong. have you recieved about 5 letters in total from them about everything and anything to do with your contract, card, billing, direct debit mandate and then a few weeks later your direct debit confirmation letter.

as for SKY themselves I know for a fact that you cannot get the number of the installer but sky will instruct them the 3 days is the max wait for a customer otherwiase they will tell the installer that they will lose the contract to install SKY

Mods, recommend this be moved to Sat forum as couple of SKY agents there that will tell the basic truths and info to resolve this.

Fastest way of getting a mod to move it is to report the first post :)

.....no matter what is said you need a land line for sky....
Ive had sky at home for five years. It was set up without a landline, and weve never connected one since. And never been asked to.

Let me get this straight first. You ordered Sky, the viewing card arrived first (as they do) then Sky arrange for the installer to come around in set up the dish. In the mean time, you brought the card to a third party to activate it. I'd be pretty sure this is in violation of Sky's terms so I'd not mention that to them in any future conversation. That third party has nothing to do with Sky or the installer I take it?

Sky will do a phone line free installation, but they charge an excess for it. The cards can be activated by ringing Sky and getting them to switch it on after giving them the serial number on the card.
but her dad was left without his usual cable TV stations!1 So he rang up the local suppliers for that and they came out and found out that the sky installer cut the pipe cord and used that for digital so his SKY was disconnected and his pipe reconnected. This is common practice as the installer probably assumed your GF's dad would be getting rid of the existing cable TV when he got Sky in. He should however have informed him that he was cutting that off and using it's cabling for the Sky dish. It happened when I first got Sky in, used the existing cabling from Chorus. The installer asked me though and I said no problem, I wanted nothing more to do with Chorus.
Now its over 3 weeks now and after they promised that they would be out day after day after day I have gotten sick of it!!

Sky should be sorting this. You should not be in contact with the installer, only with Sky. Your GF's dad needs to ring Sky and basically tell them that their installer broke things in his house when he installed Sky and that they will fix it post haste or he'll be on to his solicitor. Probably best to speak with a supervisor on this too.

I'm curious why the installer didn't mention anything about there not being a phone line present or that the card was already active. If you have no phone line they're supposed to collect that extra charge. The free dish, box and installation are subject to it being connected to the phone for 12 months. The intention is that you'll use the Sky Interactive services and Games which they will charge you for.

If Sky realise that he broke their Ts&Cs by activating the card they way he did then they may very well wash their hands of any responsibility, and charge for the full installation cost too. The installer may also claim he informed the dad about cutting the cable (as he should have done), then it's a case of he said he said.
no matter what is said you need a land line for sky
No you don't. You can get it installed without a line and you can activate a card by phoning Sky, I've done this myself.
sky will gove you a few months grace but then they just disconnect and will charge you a reconnection fee if your not black listed with them
This is certainly a possibility, but I've never heard of them carrying through with it. My first Sky installation was disconnected from the phone line as soon as the installer left, never heard anything from Sky. Of course, they do reserve the right to charge you for the installation, but they'd need to prove that you disconnected it rather than just having a dodgy phone line. Everyone I know with Sky have done the same, nobody leaves it connected to the phone.

you are quiet correct that you can get installed without a land line but my situation is that I have two boxes, one of them been a sky plus box.

the reason, I was told, as I have already stated is the land line is to confirm regularly that the two boxs are still in your house and not one of them down in your mates house because he has bad credit rating or whatever.I know my own dad has only the normal box and he has not got it connected but he has it since they started digital

My work collegue has been harrassed by SKY over failure to have his line connected and he has two boxes like me. His connection issues are one thing but yes he has been threatened with disconnection and he is only a customer about a year or more.

anything connected older than 4 years I think need not have a land line even though they might send letters asking you to consider connecting it for "better services"

jor el: you say in one statement that you activated the card yourself without a phone line and the second is that you disconnected the phone line straight away after installation. Can I take it you have had to get it installed twice? what is the time difference between installations as I have said they only got ratty about the phone line in the past couple of years?

As I understand it if you have two boxes you're getting the second one at a discount, so they need to make sure they're both at the same address, hence they're strict about the phone line.

So is it two seperate subscriptions, or 1 Multiroom subscription?

If Multiroom, then both boxes MUST be connected to the same land line permanently, as part of the T&C's of the contract. Even after a year.

If it's 2 seperate contracts, then you don't need a phoneline for the system you have running for 4 years. You may need one for the new box, unless you've signed up as a No Phone Line (NPL) customer which incurs a €37.50 fee.

Activating a card over the digibox modem takes a few minutes. Ringing up Sky can be a nightmare, and activation takes anwhere between 15 minutes and 24 hours.

Since when is this common practice? Unless its not possible a new CT100 cable should be run continuously from the dish to the sat receiver

    From reading the first post its sounds like he is dealing with independent installers from a shop or contract company{not Sky/Sierra/Finlays}
The card was activated by the installers before they came to do the install,
I would have loved to seen their faces if they could'nt have got a line of sight
Sky should be able to tell him who's ASA number the card was ordered through and trace that crowd. Then name and shame if they dont fix this mess
I agree with tony it's not common practice to use existing chorus/ntl cable

I had skyhd box and dish installed last week and it's my first time with Sky. I'd prefer not have the telephone cable showing.

The guy that installed sky said I can get a wireless telephone thing and that it would cost about €70. He named a shop that supplies it but when my husband went to buy it the shop said it was €400 and not worth it.

Does anyone know if this sounds right, is it worth it and is there an alternative?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

The wire is best and could be tidied more. €70 is more likely.

It definitely should not be 400EUR for a wireless extension! :o

The OneForAll wireless phone extensions should cost no more than €100.
