    Hi,
    A friend of mine bought one of these on ebay and was wondering is there a way of viewing avi directly without having to convert them?
    On newer avi files he is getting an error saying "cannot play audio on this file"
    or something like that.
    Any one any ideas.
    Thanks
    Sham.

    Not possible must be re-encoded to fit the decoding capabilities of the device.

    The only solid specifications I can get on the device are that it does;

    MPEG-4 SP in AVI containers via internal 320x240 LCD display.
    Audio must be in MP3 with a bit rate of 30-320 kb/s CBR & VBR

    MPEG-4 SP in AVI via external display up to 720x576
    Audio must be in MP3 with a bit rate of 30-320 kb/s CBR & VBR

    So you need to re-encode any material into those formats for it to be playable. Any existing XviD's in AVI's you have might play on an external display when hooked up to it then again they may not if they were encoded in MPEG-4 ASP as the PMA400 only support MPEG-4 SP.

    There is a semi-useful FAQ here on the slightly newer gen of the device but it mostly applies to the PMA400 as well. You should probably make sure your running the latest firmware as well the PMA400 is hidden away under "select directly your product".

    If you want an easy and good re-encoder try XviD4PSP forget the name as it does the iPod and generic encodes as well, open a file and under Core/Format select AVI as the container & select DviX as the codec with either 1 or 2 pass simple when using wide screen content select 320x176 as the res to retain the proper aspect ratio if playing on the internal screen hopefully that should work for you (the 320x176 res will only appear if the content is wide screen in the first place) for non wide content go with the normal 320x240.
