Am I too old for the NSR?

    Hi all,

Long term reader first time poster.

Considering joining the NSR. Few things worrying me:

    1) Age - I'm 32, am I just beyond it?

    2) Parade Nights - what specifically goes on then? Is it parading? Or is there Seamanship studies, navigation etc.

    3) Training - the job I'm in I could make Parade Nights 100% but it could get messy around the time of the Annual Camps or Induction Training (?) - I may have to work - just a day or two - unavoidable

I have a serious family history of Slua Muiri membership and with maturity, I feel I could commit time to the Naval Reserve. I am trying to read between the lines of the posts here and come up with some balanced judgements but to be honest I'm not getting a clear picture!

I spend a lot of my weekends on the water and do some offshore cruising, so I'm actually a bit wet behind the ears and all!

Membership of the NSR is on a voluntary basis. Training takes place on local parade nights, weekends or during paid annual training (usually 2 weeks during the summer). The NSR is open to all men and women who are not less than 17 years of age and not older than 35 years. Applicants must be not less than 5' 4" in height. Those applying for enlistment in the NSR will undergo a medical examination to ensure they are up to certain medical requirements.

I hope to. That paragraph sounds familiar buddy.

Are you a member? Can you flesh things out for me before I make a trip to the Barracks....

    I'm a member.
@ 32 you should be fine, the only problem I can see is that most people of equal rank as you would be younger than yourself but not all of them :)
Parade nights can vary, some nights you may do all foot and arms drill where as other nights you might end up doing a class on navigation, rope work etc... As a new guy you will be instructed on foot and arms drill before you get any seamanship classes though.
Training is never mandatory, we don't have a paid annual training as such like the RDF do. There are numerous courses ran throughout the year (some NSR specific and some with the full time NS) and you can apply to go on whatever ones you're eligible for and are able to go on. The whole unit doesn't go together like (I think) the RDF do. Then once you've done your recruit training, fire-fighting and sea survival you can also go to sea. I think the only thing you need to do once a year is one guard-duty on the naval base. (NSR do it every bank holiday.)
It's Tuesday today so most barracks will be parading tonight. Head up for 8pm.
    Good luck
