Live Tournament last night. Blinds are 300/600. I have about 20k and 2nd chipleader on table. Utg (Big Stack) Limps. I make it 2k with KcKs. Blinds Fold.

Chipleader is a bad player who has got lucky on a number of ocassions. Anyway flop come 10 5 3 rainbow. He checks. I bet 3k. He checkraises all in. I fold after thought showing my cards face up.

He has to have a set right??? Or even if he doesnt is it still +ev folding??

not really, he could think you just missed the flop. definitely don't show.

    I'd call here.

    Never fold here. Ever.

His range is huge. KK crushes it.

Call flop, bet or checkpush turn. push river

Instacall, you'll be in great shape to win the tournament if you win too

right, u wouldn't c/r and let your opponent away easily. so it doesn't make sense for him to have a set here.

You're probably a 70% favourite here, even including sets in his range. So the EV of a call is:

    EV = 0.7(4900 + 18000) + 0.3(-18000) = T10,630.

You can work out how often he has to have a set for folding to be correct, but it's a bit pointless, tbh. You'd have to have one hell of an amazing read for folding to be right.

It doesn't have to be a set. It will be sometimes. It'll be AT/KT/QT/JT/9T or a mid pair a lot of the time though.
    I'm rarely folding.

as you see above, the general consencus is you are wrong to fold...

...but if you think that you can outplay your opponent easily, you have pleanty of chips to fold.

Poker is gone very aggressive lately (damn students ;) ) - and they all say "well i was ahead when i put my chips in etc etc...when i got busted!!

I think patience is the key to longterm success!!

i hope it was a good fold :)

maybe this guy saw you folding to a couple c/r's earlier, so he just decided to bluff you.

if u fold here it's unlikely you have the ability to outplay the villain, and it's a bad fold regardless of what he showed in the end.

I agree that you shouldn't risk your TL on situation where you are unsure where you stand. If you believe you are the better player you should not need to take the same risks as a bad player.
BUT you dont always have the time to outplay bad players in weekly tourneys. 20/25 min clock. You are second chip leader, but you have 25% of your stack invested in the pot. If you fold, next time the blinds go up your M is 10 (assuming you dont go up or down). Thats not that comfortable anymore, But calling and winning will leave you with an M of above 27. And in a great position to win the tourney. Average stack and number of players affect my decision. If it is close to the money and 15 is still way above average, I could get away from this.

But given that you said the villian is a bad player, is he doing this with A10, JJ, QQ. I think he could be and I probably call and if he has AA or a set then so be it. The OP asked about ev. If the villian has you beaten on this flop 70% of the time, calling is still +ev

    Did he show his hand?

I'd call... and if I should somehow happen to persuade myself to fold. I wouldn't show.

Worst fold of my life. He showed a pair of 2s.

I think you sufferred from temporary 'monsters under the bed' syndrome - afraid of the very unlikely holdings that had you beaten. I've seen the likes of his play and that move so many fecking times that I guarantee you his thoughts ran something like this - 'she raised pre flop - she probably had AK / AQ / AJ - she missed that flop - her flop bet is a continuation bet - if I raise she will fold'

Consistently folding in these spots against unexperienced or clueless opponents will cost you dearly in the long run.
