Passing through the other evening it occured to me that the road through Castledermot is still all dug up? If memory serves me right has it not been like 3 years since they started and the road surface is still not nice and smooth like it should be? Anyone know why this?

It's been like that for at least 5 or 6 years now!

When it was scarified (grooved) first, it was really dodgy on a motorbike as the bike wanted to follow the grooves rather than be steered, very unnerving and quite dangerous

Of course it didn't have any effect on cars who showed their usual patience and understanding when bikers were forced to slow down to a crawl...

MAG Ireland raised this with the council, an ignorant shower if ever there was one, they made up some cock and bull story about it being 'traffic calming' but how could that be when it doesn't slow cars or trucks down at all... then they promised to fix it but didn't.

In the end it was left like that so long that the grooves wore down so they weren't such a big problem any more! Terrible state to leave any road in, never mind such an important one, but par for the course in this country really

Scarification is commonly done just before a new surface is to be put down on the road, bad enough to have that left in place for a day or two, but for years is just taking the mickey

Like the kerfuffle over dense bitumen macadam (allegedly implicated in the fatal schoolbus crash) it will unfortunately take death(s) before the councils start doing their job properly

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

There are road works scheduled for this week in castledermot so maybe they will at last repair the road

From the wonderful AA website: Roadworks are place on the N9 Main St in Castledermot from today until this Wednesday. Drivers may wish to divert via Athy as delays are likely during peak traffic.
