Surely it's the *non* exotic vets you should be contacting? after all vets who specialise in exotics have the relevant training in how to treat and look after sick exotic pets.
I dont know why you want to contact reptile haven, the guy who runs that shop knows more about reptiles than anybody I know and I have been keeping reptiles and dealing with this guy for about 15 years.
He has kept tortoises too, so I dont think he needs to be educated, quite the opposite, you could probably learn from talking to him.
    My two cents....

tallus, i want to send these to reptile shops and vets, so they can hand them out,
i have spoken to ben many times, yes he knows his stuff,
i want to send them to reptile haven because alot of people get tortoises from him, as they are so recommended, it makes sence to send them to a place where alot of people will read them,

i am sending some to the zoo tomorrow, as i told them about the idea and they are interested as they would like somthing to hand out as many people
    ask Q's about them.

Ok, you should have mentioned that in the original post dude.
I read it and thought it made you look arrogant, but now that you have explained, you look less arrogant :D.
    Hahaha jk.

    done!:D

just 1 bit of advise, if you buy a tortoise make sure they were not imported from slovenia, they are more than likely wild caught

    good luck

I was in Baumanns last saturday & they were selling them.

Mh, my nephew (8) got one a while ago... that was to replace the snake he got (that quickly died) a few weeks earlier.

Trust me. Do not comment on that.

It is an incredibly sore point for me and I have argued and fought about it for some time. The worst part is that should something happen to the poor thing it would probably be replaced by a lizard (next item on the wish list).

I'll make a copy of the care sheet and I'll bring it up with him in a 'Hey... that's so cool... did you know....' (keep in mind that 1. I have absolutely no idea about exotics and 2. He *knows it all*)

A tortoise isn't really a suitable pet for a child of that age tbh, and every pet shop seems to be selling them these days. Personally I think the pet trade should be regulated because the majority of the shop owners will tell the customer almost anything just to make a sale.
However, the onus is on the person buying the critter to do their own research, there's no excuse for anyone not to make an informed purchase these days with the wealth of information out there.

Maybe if you rang the Veterinary College they'd have a list of vets in Ireland? And if they won't give you the list, the various Golden Pages will give you a start.

hi how did it go?, i havent had the internet for a week!!,
i can only imagine that tortoises arent very exciting for a young child!!
if he thinks he knows it all, just tell him to go on the websites that i have linked on the care sheet!! , that should show him a bit, and there are tortoises pics on there which he might find cool!!:D
