Someone gave me a laptop to fix for them. Basically the Windows installation had become corrupt so with their permission I formatted and re-installed windows. Everythings fine now except when the laptop goes to boot its still picking up the old corrupt installation of Windows. Its not that much of a problem really you just have to manually select the right one each time. So does anyone know how to get rid of the corrupt Windows installation from the boot up menu?

Or boot with the windows xp disc and go to the recovery console.
    Then run
    fixmbr and fixboot

Easiest way to find out is where it says "Microsoft Windows XP", just modify one of them to say "NUMBER 2" or the like then try and boot the laptop. You'll be able to see which you modified and which is the bad one...

Click start, run, type msconfig, click the boot.ini tab, and then the "check all boot paths" button and it will automatically remove the bad one.

    Aha worked a treat!

Just realised I didnt need to re-install the operating system at all, there is some sort of recovery partition pre-installed on the laptops hard drive. I was wondering why no xp disc came with the system? Oh well it works now anyway
