E-mail issue

    Hi guys,

I have outlook express and use grisofts avg anti-virus free.

Yesterday I downloaded the new updated version of their free software and outlook has ceased to work.

    I am getting the standard:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '***', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 5100, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Now I have a bt broadband account and my two email addresses are eircom.net addresses.

I have tried changing the mail servers to mail1.eircom.net instead of the 127.0.0.1 (I believe this is set by default by some anti v programs?)

My e-mail addys still work as I have tried both on mail2web.com.

Just wondering if there is an obvious issue I am overlooking? Outlook was working with the mail servers set to 127.0.0.1 just before the download.

Also I was thinking of switching from outlook to Thunderbird the Mozilla e-mail client and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with it good or bad.

    Many thanks

Thunderbird is grand, i use it. Has a built in junk mail filter. You can dowload a calander plugin too.
Looking at the message. you changed your server address which is good but the ports are wrong. Go in to advanced and set the ports to default.

Eircom have been letting non Eircom broadband subscribers use the outbound mail server for a while

They may be just enforcing this now

if you are using BT Broadband your outbound SMTP server should be smtp.iol.ie , no username and password

    Cheers Saruman,

Did that and it was balking at my username/password.

Issue was changing user name from guv/mail1.eircom to guv@eircom.net

Many thanks for the help mate!

    Its clearly the ports though
    should be 25 and 110 not 5100 and 10061
Formatman is correct though if you are not with eircom then make sure outgoing is whayever your ISP SMTP server is.

edit glad to see its sorted

    formatman,

Seems to be still working. Will make a note of the outgoing smtp for bt in case eircom start enforcing!

    Many thanks!

You reckon it makes sense to change it, even if all working fine again?

The outgoing? Does not make a difference. eircom usually allow it but if you ever cant send email you would have to change it anyway so cant hurt.
