A Whole New World, Lift Off

I just wanted to ask readers if they remember a series of primary school English text-books, with space-themed covers, and titles like Take-Off, Reaching Out (I think), and A Whole New World? I remember them as being very good...and they had a photo of my flat in Ballymun!

I also remember a Treasury of English, with a picture of a pirate opening a treasure-chest. That wasn't so good.

It seems to me now that the school-books I see are much more patronising and desperately trying to be with-it.

I can remember Treasury of English, really must find my old stuff and have a read of it. Postcard from the Stars is popping out in my brain for some reason.

One of my nephew's school books features a family of skeletons that help deliver a series of exercises through various illustrations.

But in one illustrated scenario one of the kids in the skeleton family cuts it's knee and has to get a plaster for it.... How could someone possibly draw that picture and not realise how f*cking stupid it was?

what do you mean stupid - skeletons have magic powers which may include bleeding - did you not know that?! Back to school with you!

Was it called "reaching the heights"??. i just remember it being about a young lad and his funny friend...not sure if it was set in ballymun but in a housing blocks in cork?lol

I think you might mean "journey to the stars" instead of postcard to the stars but i could be referring to a different book!

I remember this series. In fact, I found this thread because I went looking for any mention of these books on the internet! I remember them very fondly and I'm intrigued that nobody else seems to remember them.

Even funnier, I could also see my flat in Ballymun in the illustration to which Barty Crouch refers. I went to Scoil an tSeachtar Laoch school in Ballymun.

Seeing as the original message was posted in 2007, I doubt Barty will notice this reply, but what the heck. Tried to send a private message but it seems Boards does not allow it for users under 25 posts.

Hated Treasury of English with a passion. We used to get weekend homework from it that took ages.

They were brilliant Steveone. I had 'Lift off' and 'Reaching Out' and the New World one. Some good stories in them. I remember well 'The Return of the Iron Man' and 'In the Cyclops cave'.:)
