Has anyone else been following this?
Friday Night Lights is a American Football television drama airing on NBC. The series debuted on October 3, 2006[1]and airs on Wednesday nights at 8:00 EST (formerly it ran on Tuesdays). NBC ordered an initial 12 episodes before picking it up for a full-season order on November 13, 2006, despite relatively low ratings. [2]. The program will also air on both Global and CH in Canada.

The show tries to replicate the small town, football mad mentality that's present in many parts of the US with regards to High School Football. It's based on the film of the same name and is in a similar predicament as Studio 60 - applauded by the critics, but not doing it on the rating front.

According to Wikipedia, only ITV4 are showing it in UK and Ireland but that's better than nothing imo!

I haven`t seen the tv show or the movie, but the book which it is all based on is brilliant! The film is meant to be quite good and is on my viewing list but i`m not sure how a TV show would work?

Its set in the small town of Odessa in Texas where High school football is religion. I mean its not even college football, but its all they have and they take it so seriously. The book talks about how when the team lost a game, the high school coach came back to find for sale signs had been dug in to his front garden! The guy who wrote the book spent a whole season with the team and wrote all about how crazy it is. I know the people from Odessa hated the book so they must be really loving this movie and tv series!

Well worth a read if you like sports books!

I have been following it and I think that it is the best of the new series in the US this season. I thought that the whole racial tension angle from the last 2 weeks was played very well.

I've been loving the TV series, from what I've heard it isnt doing too well over the pond though. I really hope it doesnt get cancelled before it gets at least one full season :(

FNL has a 22 episode commitment for this season anyway so it will be 1 season at least.

    Lets pray for more.

It will however be difficult for the writers to come up with a second series. ALL of the current team will have graduated and gone on to bigger and better things. They will have to create new characters which will mean that the show will have to build up a reputation again. I really do hope that the show continues for many more series!

It is by far NBC's best new TV Series and the critics just can't get enough of it and can you blame them? The characters, the actors, the emotions, the storylines, the games - they are all excellent!

Yea I've been following it and got loads of my mates into it. We all love it. It better not get cancelled or anything!!

Can I just ask are you American Football fans? As a player and fan, I can relate to some of the storylines and am in a position to better understand what exactly is going on (although sometimes even I'm amazed by what goes on!). I can unfortunately imagine non-fans of the game to feel intimidated by the almost alien theme of the show which, lets face it, isn't incredibly popular in Ireland (although the scene certainly is growing).

I certainly wouldn't say that I am an American Football fan even though I have a basic understanding of the rules. However the beauty of Friday Night Lights is that you don't need to know anything about American Football to follow the show. Most of the action takes place off the field and indeed there isn't any football shown in a lot of episodes.

I feel the same. I know the rules and that but I wouldn't follow it, my brother is the same, we both love it!

Smash is a junior and Matt is a sophomore so they are both eligible for the team next season. If the show gets renewed I guess that maybe Riggins could fail his exams and fail to graduate.

If the show isn't renewed then the coach taking the Texas State job would be a good ending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,472 ✭✭✭AdMMM

I guess that even at this stage, not even the writers know if the show is going to be renewed.

I predict that the ending of the season will be:
Panthers losing the State Championship, series ends with a meeting between the coach and those at Texas State.
. Hmmm, I don't have a career in writing TV shows anyway! I'm sure the actual storyline won't vary too much from that only they know how to make it exciting :)

Have seen a few episodes and Im hooked, but where I usually see them online has taken them down :-(

Not a follower of American football, though Ive seen some games. I suppose if you've been in that sort of community, whatever sort of sport it is, you'll understand the people of Odessa.

Have ITV4 shown many episodes yet? It's shown on wednesdays at 8 but I haven't seen it yet

They started on February 21st, so they are probably only 3 episodes in by now

I thought Sky only had the rights to seasons 1 and 2.

Its also up on the US Netflix site in HD. I`ve been watching it the last couple of weeks, fantastic stuff. Finished season 2 last night and plan on starting season 3 tonight.

Just finished watching all five seasons on Netflix a couple of weeks back and have been telling anyone who will listen how good it is. Glad I can point them in the direction of Sky now so they'll have no excuse to not watch it.

Fantastic show. Easily one of my favourites ever. Pitch perfect most of the time. Fantastic cast, writing, and just incredibly well made.

Might start watching this. Does the football side of things take up much of the story?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,084 ✭✭✭✭Kirby

    Brilliant show. Watch it.

Really enjoyed this show until they split the town with 2 high schools. It all got a bit tired after that for me. Season 1 & 2 are some of the best TV out there.

It's a bit of a cliche but it's not about Football at all really. It's only there as a way to keep all the characters together and some of the football scenes can be incredibly dramatic.

FNL is really about community and family. Maybe not the greatest TV show ever made but definitely my favourite ever.

    A must watch.

Just watched the first episode there and to be honest I thought it was a load of old hackneyed tosh.

Star QB gets career-threatening injury in important football game so nice-guy-substitute comes on and (after a couple of bad plays) saves the game in the last seconds.

    Never seen that before.

Bollocks, tbh. Will have to be some major improvements in the next episode to keep me watching.

Breaking your back threatens more than your career. They deal with this very well over the course of the season and don't hollywood it up at all.

And if memory serves, the town accuse the new QB is being a one trick pony and throwing the hail mary pass with his eyes closed :p

It's a great show. Stick with it.

I've been working my way through Season 1 of this over the past week. I did start watching before in 2007 but work/time commitments made me stop a little into S2. I really enjoyed the first season. Trying to hold back a bit before hitting S2 as I OD a bit on the show once I start watching. From my memory though S2 was tougher going. My main memory was Tammy being tired and screaming all the time, along with the baby and Julie being a bitch. I'm amazed this was an NBC show though. It's that good! If it was HBO I wouldn't be surprised but it's one of NBC's finest hours really.

I'm just nearing the end of season 3 now and I'm loving it so far. Season 2 was pretty poor and tough going but I had heard that before watching so just blazed through it to get it out of the way, thankfully it picks back up in season 3.

Worth it for Lyla Garrity alone :D

I watched all 5 seasons over the course of about 2 months recently. I was adicted to this show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

Excellent IMO. Started watching it last year and finished the whole thing within about 3 weeks.

The ending is brilliant too, they picked the perfect way and time to do so and didn't ruin the show by dragging it needlessly on for another couple of seasons like many shows end up doing.

I don't think they will ever make it to Blu-Ray, to be honest.

Here's a forum post (albeit from last summer) with many posters saying there's no hope of it being released on Blu-Ray:

    http://forum.dvdtalk.com/hd-talk/575845-no-blu-ray-release-friday-night-lights-tv-series.html

I've had a quick search around and it doesn't seem to be available anywhere.
