    A few questions:

Is this proper, full HD or some kind of 'compatible' version? Is this a good price? Should I wait a few more months for 1080p screens to fall further? This seems to be a massive price drop over just a few weeks ago for 1080p.

According to the Sharp website it's the real deal...

Seems a good price from DID when you compare it to the recommended UK price from Sharp.

I got one from DID. It’s a good screen. Best LCD I have ever seen but blacks are still not a good as CRT. Getting sky HD soon. Stunning with DVD using cheap RGB scart and JVC DVD player. Connected up PC to see 720p HD trailers and wow wow wow. 1080p is only available through HDMI so not tested yet. 6ms response time means no ghosting. Good viewing angles but not as good as sharp claim. Sometimes there is a humming noise from it depending on settings.

www.AVforums.co.uk has a huge thread on it and they have lots of problems including banding and dead pixels. I have none of that. Built in speakers are not great. Piano black frame is nice. Overall I would recommend this set.

    Nice review here

    Ice_Box,

I've put a deposit on one of these sets yesterday after reading latenia's opening post (thanks latenia). It's due to be in-store tomorrow.

I also read the huge thread (approx 430 pages and counting) on avforums.co.uk and the further I got into it the more I started to have 2nd thoughts about this purchase, after reading about the issues about banding and the viewing angles.

    1. Where did you purchase your unit and what serial number is it?
    2. Before purchasing were you aware of the various issues mentioned on avforums and did you ask the supplier what come back you had in case you also experienced the same issues?

    Thanks!

    Hi mads

I got mine in DID in Lucan.

    Serial number is 612...

I was well aware of all the problems and my plan was to return it for a panasonic plasma if I was in anyway unhappy. The kid in DID said I could do this within 28 days if it was faulty. I also got the 3 year extended warranty for €149 just to be safe. If a fault develops after 28 days sharp will send out a repair man. In AVforums most of the problems seem to be with the 46 and 52 inch models. ( I got the 42)

Its good value all right. I believe it was 2599 before christmas. A guy here at work says Dixons in Belfast sell it for 1050 sterling.

    Cheers Ice_Box.

Re: the 3 year extended warranty, what does this cover you for? If for e.g., the dreaded banding issue was to arise, would Sharp still send an engineer out check it, and replace if faulty?

How does SD look on it? I'll be running NTL Digital through mine but have heard Sky is a better quality SD feed and looks better, so am thinking of switching....

    Ta.

They said the warranty would cover all faults that develop over the next 3 years. Having said that I have not read the terms and conditions.

I only have chorus analogue at the moment. It’s excellent on some channels but others look like they're not tuned in properly but that’s just down to chorus. I think it will be excellent with a digital source.

Picked up this tv the weekend too after much deliberations over it and the Samsung F71 series. Got it in DID too and its a 612 batch. So far no buzzing or banding.

Pic quality over rgb scart from standard dvd player is fecking awesome.. Hooked up me laptop over hdmi and played a few sample 1080p vids and it looks superb. Hoping to get sky hd in soon to see what its like with normal tv.. but so far so good. Havent tried the inbuilt speakers yet as I have my sound going through a separate receiver.

    Ice, Lynchie,

Picked up my model last night in DID Blanch - also went for the 3- year warranty.

Haven't had much time to play around with the picture settings yet but just as an FYI, what settings have each of you chosen?

    Cheers.

    Hi guys

I purchased one of these sets and must say I prefer it to the 40" Sony that I recently sold. I have hooked it upto my PC via a DVI - HDMI lead and downloaded the latest GEFORCE (6600) drivers I have selected the following resolution 1920 x 1080 and The icons left hand side are cut off, I have tried various settings with the NVIDIA contol app to no avail. How can I achieve 1:1 mapping on this set and have the whole desktop on the screen?

My biggest gripe with the tv so far is the lack of a "proper dedicated component connector" having to use a connector connected to the pc port is a pain. I was hoping to connect my Xbox 360 and HDDVD drive via VGA cable to get 1080p movies. The picture quality through the Xbox and my Toshiba HD DVD drive is superb. Thanksfully I have not had any of the problems as mentioned in the AV Forums site. Touvh wood. I bought mine in DID and took advantage of the 3 year warranty.

Thanks in advance for any help.

i got this set about 2 months ago, and in general im happy enough with it.. 2 major problems tough.

On skin tones there is a huge amount of smudging which can be very distracting and hard to get rid of..

During horizontal panning of a single colour i.e. pitch or sky, vertical banding is fairly obvious.. seems worse on sky than dvds..

The skin tone smudging is the worst problem anyone any ideas how to get rid of this...

I am interested in getting one of these sets but looking at the LCDs and Plasmas in Harvey Norman, the colour on some of them seems to be over-saturated or too bright.

Is there anyway to calibrate the colour of them?
I have a SpyderExpress for calibrating computer monitors.

Also, is there any AGP graphics cards that can output the required resolution to run the set at 1080p either over VGA or HDMI ? I plan on hooking this up to MSI Shuttle PC.

    Thanks
    Darragh

Guys whats the SD reception from a SKY digital box like?(Not sky+ or Sky HD).

Someone posted earlier that it has a 6ms response. I was in DID and they had the 46'' with 4ms response. The sales guy told me the 42'' was the same.
So I went with that.Managed to get 5% off price so happy enough.

Im only using chorus analogue at the moment and its good when reception is good. SD pic from 2 year old DVD player via scart is stunning. So good in fact that Im not going to bother getting an upscaling DVD player. I've ordered sky HD.

Im pretty sure my 42" is 6ms.
