It's official. Aaron Eckhart is to play Harvey Dent (and eventually Two-Face in later films) in the up coming Batman sequal 'The Dark Knight.' The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that Eckhart, star of The Black Dahlia and The Core, is in final negotiations to play the Gotham City District Attorney and friend of Bruce Wayne who becomes one of Gotham's most dangerous villains.

Dunno about you, but I'm pretty excited about this casting!

This is great news. Eckhart can play both the charming ladies man AND the intimidating nut job equally well. And with that chin and jawline he actually looks like a character from a comic book!
Some of the name's being bandied about before - Ryan Philippe, Josh Lucas, Matt 'Preppy' Damon et al - were a bit too young and babyfaced for Dent. I think its better that the character is older than Bruce, around his mid-to-late 30s, it's more realistic for someone who has supposed to have risen all the way to the post of District Attorney.

Also Maggie Gyllenhaal is strongly rumoured to joining the cast. Whether she's being re-cast as Rachel Dawes in place of Katie Holmes or playing an entirely new character is not yet known. For for it's worth, I'd think she'd make a great Selina Kyle.

Hey Petey, you probably should have titled this thread 'Aaron Eckhart is Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Batman Begins Sequel' - it's not getting the interests it deserves!

I haven't seen Eckhart in many films. I've heard Thank You For Smoking is great and I want to see Black Dahlia. In fact, I think I've only seen him in Paycheck...great film...ahem...yeah...
But he's a great choice for Harvey Dent, I suspect he'll pull off both of the character's personalities very well.

So he's only going to be playing Dent in this one.....it probably won't be too taxing for him then just playing a simple old DA.

    not that old
not that simple.......quite a straight character at the beginning though

    Eh... what?

Anyway, I'm just delighted that Dent's going to be a major character in the next film(s). Along with the Joker, he's easily one of my favourite Batman villains. I was as excited by Eckharts casting as I was with Ledgers, but, and I'm sure you all noticed, it didn't get anyway near the same kind of media attention. I think the reason for this is because the 60s Batman TV show still defines the Batman universe for many people (as much as we Batman fans are reluctant to admit it) particularly in regards to the villains. For example, in the comics the Riddler is a fairly minor character and not taken very seriously by the fans or DC. But he looms large in the minds of the general public because of Frank Gorshin's memorable portrayal of him in the TV show.
Conversely(?) Harvey Dent/Two-Face isn't very well known by the public at large precisely because he didn't feature in the Adam West show. I always assumed he didn't appear because he was too scary for children or because the make-up job was too elaborate (possibly both reasons). I remember a character called False-Face - his shtick was being a master of disguise - and i imagine he was the Two-Face stand-in, so to speak.

Anyhoo, we Bat-fans know how important Dent is, yet it's going to very satisfying to see the general cinema audience being completely blown away by such a fantastic character, with his journey from principled idealist to corrupt villain - and I believe Eckhart will really do him justice.

Did I mention how much I'm looking forward to this film?

Now I haven't read The Long Halloween in a good while, but I'm fairly certain that's not how Dent was portrayed in that. Or in any other stories as a matter of fact. I remember him being overly reckless, charming, vain, headstrong and argumentative. He was basically the opposite of Gordon, who tends to be written as a straight-laced, by-the-book, unassuming kinda guy.
Remember in Year One it was Dent who teamed up Batman first, a few months before Gordon. Actually Gordon spent weeks trying to apprehend Batman before they eventually link up. It was only after Batman saves the life of his son that he realises this guy is trustworthy. For Dent to ally himself with Batman so early after his appearance, knowing relatively little about him, was a huge risk on his part, albeit one which was worth taking (unlike some of his later decisions).

In fact, Batman is also seen as a more sensible, planning-ahead type of character than Dent.

The principle difference between Batman/Gordon and Dent, is that the latter lets his crusade against organised crime develop into a personal vendetta against various mob bosses like Falcone and Maroni. He becomes blind to real justice and merely justs wants to kills them.
This is all played out well before he actually becomes Two-Face. The acid scarring inflicted on him by Maroni is merely the straw that breaks the camels back with regards to his sanity (even if it is a pretty big piece of straw).
