Anyone know a website anywhere that would have mp3 clips of a load of different amps for comparison? If so do tell!

im sure there are some cause boss have simulations for their pedals. but honestly its better to try before u buy wit ur own guitar. even if u went locally to try then bought off the net.

like the youtube idea. Problem is I dunno what I want so was hoping i could find a site with a load of em already on it to whittle down my options a bit

I remember coming across a site with a load of clips for mesas, soldanos, marshalls etc, cant think of the address....ill post if i do.

But yeah, better to whittle it down a little, and then search specifically for those amps. You must have some kind of idea what kind of sound youre looking for?

something for a rock covers band. doing the usual Lizzy, AD/DC etc. nice crunch and warm lead tones maybe. I've spent so many years getting a heavy as fcuk scouped death metal tone I'm having trouble dialing it back a bit to moderate rock tones! lol

I'm thinking something like a 2 x 10 Marshall or Fender combo or something

Whats your budget? D'you need combo or have you a cab already?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 286 ✭✭!_Brian_!

I'm thinking around 5 or 600 euro and was leaning towards combos for ease of transport. I have a H&K Warp 7 so could use that cab if needed but its a big b@stard and some pain in the hole to lug around.

I cant think of anything out of the ordinary in that price range - i'd say youre just looking for a good old reliable blues/rock amp, something along the likes of peavey classic, Laney VC, Fender Hot Rod, that kind of thing. A mesa rocket 44 should be in your range too, except theres not a lot around

Theyre common enough that there should be clips of them all on you tube.

Savage clean tone out of that Peavey Classic! Cant find any clips with distortion tho.

Whats the general consencous (sp?) on Marshall MG100 DFX and HDFX's? Pretty decent tone judging by the demos I found on youtube and pretty decent price from Gak, the HDFX and cab at less than 550 here

Also, check out www.Gearwire.com might be the site you were on about earlier, if not worth a gander

Stay as far away from the Marshall MGs as possible! They're god awful.

    but their so cheap!

on a more serious note, why?! :D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Because they're so cheap!

They are sh1t, i had one for a year and it was TERRIBLE you can get SO much better for the price of even the MG100 combo (peavey classic). You only want it because it has a marshall badge on it but anyone that knows anything about guitar will pretty much look down on you for actually buying an MG.

Aye man, for the love of god stay away from the MG series, youd get a better tone by farting into a bucket.

don't bother your hole with the valvestate mg series i've had one for the last year or so and its grand for learning on but for gigging the sound won't be up to scratch,i'm gonna upgrade it to a mesa or engl soon as i just picked up a j-cusom(picks to follow when i get 5 mins;) ),it just isin't that great compared to the peavey classic etc for the similar price range!

would ya not save an extra few bob and get a tube amp no? or is it just a nice sounding valvestate your after?

Nah I'm just after something reasonably cheap, compact and light just for a covers band to make a few quid so I'm not setting myself up for life like.

Presumably the Peavy Classic has a drive channel? Tried to find a clip of it on youtube but only cleans ...

Not a comparision, but this site seems interesting at first glance.

Just came across this site, its started up recently, people send in clips of their gear, and you can search by amp, seems to be along the lines of what the OP was looking for.

I cant vouch for it (could be full of porn pop-ups for all I know:D ), but I had a quick look and it seems alright, you dont need to log in to view clips or any of that rubbish.

go to www.gak.co.uk and get the Marshall 1987x. Its a bit over your price but its such a great amp man!!http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/marshall-1987x/297

or you could get a Vintage Modern. But Im not impressed by those.

Also just remember to get it from England, about 300 euro cheaper than thomann and Musicstore.

You'd be as well to buy one of the recent budget valve amps (peavey valve-king, randall, bugera), before you blow a grand on a made-in-china marshall 're-issue'. You'll save 500 euro and probably get a better amp.

At the very least, pick up an original point-to-point. If something goes wrong with the 1987x, take it to Aladdins amps and see if they'll even look at the amp, with the flimsy PCBs that'll snap as soon as you look at them, aside from the fact that there's not much you can do with them anyway.

Nah, there's very few modern Marshall amps that are even pale comparisons of classic Marshalls. All your buying is a badge.
