going to head into carlow town friday afternoon to pick up a wii (birthdays rock) . Anyone got any suggestions as to games?

I really want pro ev 6, is that out for the wii? found an article dated october 06 saying they were developing it then but is it out yet?

never played any Zelda games before but the ads make it look pretty sweet. I'd hate to have all this excitement pent up inside me, then make a mistake and pick a dirt game.
    Help me

    please

there are no soccer games on wii at the moment but there will probably be some soon(or you could buy the gamecube version and play it on the wii).
I would definitely choose zelda,it will have you addicted for ages:p

well I got a gamecube a few months ago, could have waited for the Wii but I was just desperate to play mario kart and super monkey ball. I tried to find pro ev soccer in dublin but no luck, wouldn't imagine my chances would be better in carlow.. didn't see any on ebay either for the GC.. but I'll look again in a short while I guess.

is that wii sports any good?

Wii Sports is great fun and comes bundled with the Wii. I'd say get Rayman and Zelda for now. Sonic is coming out in March.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

sonic? kickass.. I've been looking at a few reviews online, zelda rayman and Cod3 all look pretty good. Interested in need for speed carbon too.. loved underground, and the wii remote oughta make it interesting play.

what are the typical prices for games?

-edit . I've just seen the word 'kitschy' in about six different reviews of the nintendo wii... hrm

Here's a fair few of the games coming out this year also:

    http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html?constraint.eq.game.locale=uk

There are a load more like Prince of Persia and a good many Nintendo games (Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Galaxy (fingers crossed) and Metroid Prime 3 (if retro were actually bought back then  ))

Games can be from €45 (what i paid for Warioware on launch from Smyths) to €60... HMV might tack on a few quid too.

The "I'm buying a wii on friday" thread title would suggest you have actually pre-booked it and have heard of a shipment tomorrow.

Otherwise, the thread should probably be "i'm... possibly... might be / might not be... depending on stock levels... buying a wii on friday"! :D

Ah no, best of luck in getting one. I might go over to Smyth's tomorrow and take the plunge and pre-book one rather than just waiting for the day i go in and there's plenty of them on the shelves for my perusal and eventual purchase.

Most of your questions have already been answered so i've (as usual) shag all else to add.

carbon is pants compared with the other NFS games. avoid it. That being said i played it on 360 but cant imagine its any better on wii.

Zelda IS as good as everyone says it is, though i thought it had a slow start. Once u get over the initial area in it You'll not put it down.

Congrats mordypoo, happy birthday!, definitely get Zelda! Rayman is a good launch, fun minigames, does get a bit boring after a while though.

Oh yeah and Happy Birthday Mordeth!

(this thread was all just a cunning ruse to get Happy Birthday messages! :D)

I was in carlow a week or two ago and I saw several wii's in the store so hopefully they still have them.. i'm gona ring the store and find out later

    Happy Birthday Mordeth.
I picked up my Wii from Smyth's yesterday - they had 3 palettes delivered, however they told me that they were pre-order only, as I wanted to pick one up for a friend of mine.

    I love my Wii!!!

Now, to get more games! (Mario Kart 64 will be the first of many I think)

    rofl

    classic.
naturally you'd have to fully play each game to see if they're suitable for your child.

of course. But i am sure he would love it when i give him a go just a little go mind you

of course, of course.. too much television and electronic stimulation can be bad for children. You'd be best to buy him a good book as well, while you proof-test the wii

bad luck. Not such a happy birthday after all. I feel your pain. Keep on the trail on you'll get it soon. Any other game stores in your area might be worth checking as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭djkeogh

wow, I was on a late post there huh. Great news. Get stuck into it and have the lads around for beers this evening. You'll never look back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,988 ✭✭✭✭kippy

Jaysus, I didnt realise there were still that hard to get. I must have been awful lucky.
Wasn't really shopping for one but spotted a load in smyths in galway a couple of fridays ago and said what the hell, I'll pick one up. Got it easily, there were at least 40 others. That said I happened to be back there a week or so later and there didnt seem to be any.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 sa406

i got one in smyths.i pre-booked one and they said it would be about a month and that i would get a phone call when it arrived.
a week after id pre-booked it i heard they got some in for a few people on the top of the list( i was way down the list) so i went up and said i got phone call (even tho i didnt) and they gave me one.they never even checked the book to see was i meant to get one.
i know it was someones elses but i couldnt help it i really really wanted one!!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

well, I got it.. got sports with it and zelda as well

i didn't know you got the remote and the nunchuck with the console.. so I bought a nunchuck as well.. now I have two nunchucks and only one remote. 24 euro well spent

so far I am incredibly unimpressed with wii sports.. and at how close to the tv you have to be. The couch isn't that far away from the tv and even still I have to step in real close, but that's a small gripe.

I'm gona go give zelda a go now.. and hopefully I'll love it else I just wasted a whole load of money on a birthday present I'm not all that fond of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

You don't have to be close to the TV, Mordeth... Wii Sports is fun, but shallow - its free - get over it! :)

Zelda on the other hand is a masterpiece.... You're going to love it.

Give the training in Wii Sports the lash. There's a great golf one where you have to launch the ball in the air and hit targets on one of 2 floating islands - really satisfying when you nail it and later sort out delicate little putting movements - then you'll be ready for a 9 holer!

Get another wiimote for 2 player tennis - it's a hoot. You shouldn't need to be any closer to the telly than 6-8 feet or thereabouts - make sure your motion sensor is postition correctly and straight on to the player. You won't be disappointed by Zelda! Enjoy.

Congrats on getting one Mordeth... ya crafty bugger!

I'm weighing my options for what to do now i'm home from work, and before the girlfriend gets home around 7.30:

    * Write a little Java app which will synchronise my daily bout of shows / films each day to my Argosy Media Drive - with a single click.
    * Go over and pre-order a Wii - Smyth's is about 20 minutes away from me.

    VOTE NOW! :D

PS - oh, and my 30GB Zen:Vision M should be arriving any minute now too. Sister's boyfriend got me one in Carphone Warehouse - cost me €40 with a voucher and staff discount!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

tmb, the little finger icon won't come up on the screen unless i'm about 1-1.5m away from the tv. and in zelda the little blue icon just stays at tghe very top of the screen.. I didn't know it was a pointer until i walked closer to the screen waving the remote .. took me ages to figure out what to do with the eagle

still can't find the fishing rod to get fish for the cat

head wrecking bloody game :) I never liked rpg's

does height matter for the motion senser? cos if I put it at the bottom, or top of the tv.. there's still a bit of a gap from where I'd be holding the remote and where the sensor would be.

basquille - sod the pre order, just drive down to carlow. Ken blacks has a few of them behind the counter for sale. get the number from 11850 and ask them to hold one for you.

Sorry, don't agree with this at all. Zelda is by far my biggest disappointment of the year. I find it far more frustrating than it is fun to play. The story is in no way gripping or compelling and doesn't make you want to continue on playing at all.

I'm nearly finished the snow peaks but to be honest I'm going to call it quits at this stage. I'm only playing it for the sake of playing it at this stage.

hrm.. well the wiimote works fine when i'm sitting on the couch for playing bowling or tennis or whatnot, but if I actually want to point at something specific I have to get within 2 feet of the receiver.

after playing with it for 3 hours or so now.. I'm not entirely thrilled, but I am in no way dissapointed.. I think I just have to get the right game. And I feel like I've actually done some exercise.. which is amazing.

time for a cigarette now though :)

Mordeth, all you need to do there with the pointer is up your sensitivity in the options menu. Sorts it out no problem. :)

aaah right, sweet. I'll give that a go now

update.. got the fish, cat's back to the shop and I got the slingshot!

cept now my wiimote ain't working anymore, could the batteries be gone after 4-5 hours? I'll try upping the sensitivity and see if it works
    #

    --edit

Excellent! sensitivity upped and now it works while I'm sitting on the nice comfy couch

    muchos spankos senor

I'm gona go outside and smoke a cig while I play zelda :)

Have a €100 One4All voucher that i plan to use for my Wii and only Argos and Smyth's accept them.

So.. i took the plunge and pre-ordered one in Smyths earlier on. €25 deposit and they're expecting them late next week so he'll give me a call as soon as they're in.

The ones they get in aren't going on shelves - they're all for pre-order!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

    good luck :)

on my front.. I love my wii

stuck in zelda, so I'm not gona play that for aonther hour or two but I've spent the last 2 hours training on wii sports and it's actually pretty fun. Bowling is still incredibly head wrecking, whatever I do my shots all swerve to the left.. but baseball is pretty fun.. And tennis ain't too bad either once you get the hang of it.

think I'll pick up rayman or call of duty soon enough.. I need some variety

yeah, that happens to me, i find if you move your Mii to the right [using the dpad on the Wiimote] about 3 or four presses, depending on how severe the swerve is, tends to work out quite well.
It's fairly rare now that i don't either make a strike, or pick up the spare.

    i'll try that

I just realised a few minutes ago my parents have a wireles router.. my wii is updating right now
    *glee*

I wonder what I'll buy first

    -edit

well, it updated... I pressed ok, and it started updating again

    ffs

my wireless connection must be terrible
