    Hi all,

I have an interview with Murex in Dublin for a Java software developer role. I have been told the interview consists of a written 'test' and an interview. Have any of you been interviewed for this position and can tell me what the written 'test' involves? The company told me that they cannot tell me what the test involves and that you cant prepare for it. Anybody any clues?

    Cheers,
    Jeff

Hey, i had an interview with them before a good while back.

IIRC, the written test was split into 2 - one part for Java / Comp. Sci stuff, and the second part was to test your Maths (Statistics) knowledge.

was that for a Graduate role? did you get the job?

Can you tell me if I need to look over Java stuff? I havent a clue about Maths (Statistics) since I havent done it since school!

If you could give me some more info about the questions I would be very grateful.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

I had an interview Murex a few months ago for a graduate position - not related to Java though so can't help you there.

The maths/stats assesment that they give is pretty intense. I had done engineering maths for 2 year's in college and it was barely enough. Some of the stats questions aren't too bad, but you would want a very good grounding in Leaving Cert Honours maths (as a minimum requirement) before you tackle this assesment.

Hope this hasn't put you off too much but that was my experience of the interview.

Hopefully they dont depend too much on the test part and I may have a chance.

hallelujah, yes, it was for a Graduate position but no, i didn't get the job :)

The interview was back in Sep '05, so i honestly cant remember it too well. I vaguely recollect there being written questions to do with Threads in Java and some Client / Server stuff.

There were also quite a few written questions to write pieces of code to perform some difficult mathematical functions (differentials, etc...) :/

Like Kojak above, i found the Maths / Stats portion of the written test pretty intense. While I did have 3 yrs of maths under my belt from college, this part of the written test was not something I prepared for at all (much to my embarrasment). As it wasn't just your basic 'Compute the standard mean...' or 'Compute the standard deviation...' type questions you find at Leaving Cert level (which i expected) - but rather it was all university level questions (which i should have expected but was concentrating too much on preparing for the JAva portion).

Best of luck in your interview. The graduate role looks like an excellent one, so even getting as far as the interview process is a job well done :)

So got the test done. It was a mixture of maths, C and Java. Also xml, windows, RMI as well. I didnt touch the maths part. It didnt seem too difficult for someone who has studied maths but I havent for years. The code stuff was ok, just scope of variables, etc. I told the HR man I didnt do well in the maths section and he said not too worry too much about that bit. I'll know next week if I'm called for a second interview. They work from 9-6.30 or 7 so I'm not sure if I even want the job now. Of course I told them this 'would not be a problem at all'.
